STEINS;GATE, the inexplicably named – but excellent – sci-fi visual novel from MAGES, is getting a third remake this 20th August in Japan, for both PS5 and PS4.
While a Western release date technically hasn’t been announced at the time we write this, the game will support English language subtitles at launch, suggesting it’ll probably drop day-and-date with its Japanese counterpart.
Fans will remember the original game – which fascinatingly first released on Xbox 360 in 2009 – was ported to the PSP, PS3, and PS Vita. It was then re-released using scenes from its anime for the PS4 and PS Vita again.
And now it’s getting a remake, with new art assets, an updated user interface, and a “revitalised” storyline.
Here’s how the blurb pitches it:
“Characters, artwork, and the user interface have been completely refreshed in this reboot, while an original new scenario expands the world’s story. Akihabara has been recreated with stunning realism and depth, drawing you deeper than ever into its streets and secrets.”
The press release says you can expect “brand-new scenarios and optimised systems” so “both newcomers and longtime fans can experience STEINS;GATE like never before”.
It sounds like whether this is your first time playing STEINS;GATE or you’re already familiar with the franchise, this will be worth a shot.
You can check out some new gameplay above which shows off the new art style well. Obviously this is still a visual novel, so you’ll be spending the bulk of your time reading, as is typically the case in these kinds of games.
