There’s compelling evidence to suggest Gears of War: E-Day, the latest entry in The Coalition’s bulky third-person shooter series, will release in September.
That’d get it out of the way of GTA 6, of course, but potentially put it on a crash course collision with tentpole PS5 exclusive, Marvel’s Wolverine. The Insomniac effort is officially scheduled to release on 15th September.
But in a rare marketing blitz, Microsoft is putting money behind upcoming wrestling event Triplemania 2026, which is scheduled to take place between 11th September and 13th September in Mexico. And its headline sponsor will be, well, Gears of War: E-Day.
And this is where the big questions arise: will the prequel be playable on the PS5?
Ordinarily, we’d have said there’s no doubt about it: remaster Gears of War Reloaded, released last year, felt like a primer for PS5 fans to get a feel for Marcus Fenix.
All of Xbox’s major titles have been ported to PlayStation – with even upcoming games like Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable confirmed.
But new executive Asha Sharma has been tip-toeing around this topic, telling elated Xbox influencers that she wants to plot a return to console and will need to re-evaluate the manufacturer’s approach to exclusivity.
Xbox Series X|S hardware sales are – to put it bluntly – in the toilet, posting year-on-year-on-year declines. With the existence of Game Pass, it’s hard to see where Microsoft will actually make money on its first-party games without bringing them to PS5.
But Gears of War: E-Day remains one of the few titles in its slate not confirmed for PlayStation, and so we’ll be watching next month’s Gears of War: E-Day Direct – scheduled to follow immediately after the Xbox Games Showcase – to see if it confirms PS5 or not.
Our guess? It’s probably happening, but we suppose it could be a timed Xbox exclusive for a short period like Forza Horizon 6.
It doesn’t look like we’ll have to wait too long to find out for sure.
