Bungie’s graphic retro futurism extraction shooter, Marathon, has been fully released into the world, offering one of the most aesthetically pleasing and immensely daunting PvPvE experiences out there, forcing its players to use everything to their advantage if they want to exfil and hold onto their valuable loot. But to carry lots of rare and potent gear, you must get your hands on Backpacks, which can be hard to come by in the early going.
Fortunately, once you get into the swing of things, you will be able to unlock Backpacks in the Armory, allowing you to purchase them with Credits. You can slowly unlock rarer qualities of Backpacks to expand your total slots further, allowing you to carry even more things. Just be prepared to grind, as you will need to focus on leveling specific Factions to get your hands on these upgrades!
How To Unlock And Expand Your Backpack Size
Getting your hands on a Backpack can be a bit tricky in Marathon, especially when you’re first starting out, since you won’t be able to purchase them with Credits until a bit later. However, the more you keep playing, the more you will obtain Backpacks from numerous sources, whether that be looting them from another player’s corpse, completing Contracts, or spending your hard-earned Credits on them via the Armory.

Introducing Nucaloric is one of the first difficult contracts you’ll get in Marathon, and here’s how you can easily beat it.
Luckily for you, leveling the CyberAcme Faction (the first available Faction) will allow you to unlock Backpacks in their Armory, allowing you to purchase them with Credits. But, before you can do that, you must reach specific levels and milestones, and you will need lots of Credits. Here are all the requirements for unlocking rarer Backpacks in the CyAc Armory!

There are also some excellent Credit-based unlocks via the CyAc unlock tree, allowing you to raise the maximum amount of Credits you can hold and even obtain Credits whenever you open containers. So, while you need lots of Credits to unlock and purchase these Backpacks, there are ways to earn lots of Credits quickly. Completing Contracts can also reward a hefty amount of Credits, so don’t sleep on them!
Other Methods Of Obtaining Backpacks
While getting your hands on the Enhanced Backpack via the CyAc Armory won’t take too much grinding, if you want a better one until you reach CyAc Rank 15 for a better one, you must rely on other methods. Fortunately, there are many other ways to get your hands on rarer Backpacks without having to shellout a ton of Credits. However, you will be relying a bit on luck, which is to be expected in a loot-based extraction shooter.
One of the best ways to obtain Backpacks in Marathon is to complete Faction Contracts, as they often include them as a Reward. The further you get, the rarer the Backpack can be, so you can end up with Deluxe Backpacks by simply completing Contracts. Aside from that, some Sponsored Kits will include a Backpack, which you can keep if you can survive long enough to exfil.
Sponsored Kits with Backpacks, especially rarer ones, will typically cost a lot of Credits to unlock, so ensure it has a layout that works with your favorite Runner Shell and playstyle, as you must successfully exfil to keep the Backpack, else you will waste a large sum of Credits for no real gain. These Kits usually have decent weapons and consumables as well, so the price is largely worth it if you can get out alive!
Then, of course, you can find Backpacks while looting regions in each zone, as well as taking them from another player’s corpse. While it will eventually be easier just to purchase them from the Armory, these additional methods will likely be your primary way of obtaining rarer Backpacks early on, which can make a substantial difference as they allow you to enter each run with more resources and leave with more stuff!
If you fancy playing the Thief, you can also steal rarer Backpacks from other players if it’s the most valuable item in their Backpack. While this is rare, some players may loot a Backpack and not equip it immediately, allowing you to snatch it from them with your trusty Pickpocket Drone!
