Platinum Trophy #26: Minute of Islands

Yes, this edition of Going Platinum is late. However, in my defence, I’ve been very very busy. Also, it was a bank holiday weekend. Also, I’m feeling quite ill. Also, it’s too damn hot.
None of these things are the fault of Minute of Islands, the subject of today’s entry. The only thing it’s guilty of is being a cool little game I played about five years ago.
One thing that’s interesting about the written word is that there’s no indication of how long the gaps are between writing one line and the next. For context, these last two sentences came following a five-minute block of nothing, in which I tried and failed to recall anything about Minute of Islands.
This, also, isn’t the game’s fault. It is quite memorable. However, reminiscing is that little bit harder when it feels like someone’s inflated a balloon inside your head.
I feel like I owe developer Studio Fizbin an apology. No other Going Platinum has gotten this deep without any real chatter about the game itself. The good news is I’ve just finished my Lemsip, which revealed the one benefit of being under the weather: I couldn’t taste it.
Anyway, Minute of Islands. It’s cool! The most striking thing about it, well, there are two things. Firstly, I love how it looks. The hand-drawn, almost Adventure Time-like aesthetic is really well done, and exploring each environment and just enjoying the scenery is great.
The other striking thing is that the game is surprisingly dark. Its cute presentation belies a world on the brink of collapse, and as you get deeper and deeper into it, Minute of Islands is prepared to show you some pretty horrible sights.
There’s one island I remember you backtrack across a few times throughout the adventure, and you’ll see a beached whale go through a few stages of decomposition. It’s pretty nasty, but you can’t really fault the execution.
I also remember the game is pretty short, and pretty easy. If you’re looking for something you can platinum in the space of like six hours or so, this is a nice one to get.
Not only is the Trophy list small and very straightforward, you’ll also get to experience this game’s surreal world and simple puzzles.
Cheers, Minute of Islands.
