The PS5’s DualSense is an excellent controller for many reasons, but it’s not without its flaws, one of which is the thorny issue of stick drift.
Stick drift is a wear-and-tear problem that essentially means a pad’s thumbsticks stop behaving properly, with characters or cameras moving without you touching the controls.
This is something affecting a lot of controllers on the market, but when you’re paying $70-$80 for one, you’d hope they wouldn’t run into issues like this, at least not for a long time.
Well, a new PS5 pad, the Scuf Omega, offers somewhat of a solution, as it features Tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) analog sticks that are much less prone to drifting.
Announced recently on the PS Blog and available to buy now, the Scuf Omega controller is a premium bit of kit that features lots of additional features for hardcore players:
- TMR sticks that use magnetic sensors to minimise contact, resulting in a much longer lifespan
- 11 customisable inputs, including four rear paddles, two side buttons, and five buttons between the grips
- A mobile app that lets you create custom button mapping profiles
- Face and trigger buttons with mechanical switches, using the same tech as gaming mice for precise inputs
One thing it doesn’t have, unfortunately, is rumble; the vibration modules have been removed, so if you like having any sort of tactile feedback, it’ll be a step down from the DualSense’s haptics.
If you don’t mind about that, the other catch is that you’ll need to pay a premium for all these bells and whistles. The Scuf Omega will set you back $219.99/£209.99/€239.99, comparable to the DualSense Edge.
It’s possibly worth the investment if you spend a lot of time playing games on your PS5, and want a more flexible controller with all those customisable buttons.
