Nearly 20 years after Rosalina was first introduced in Super Mario Galaxy, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has finally confirmed what her relationship with Peach is.
Considering most Mario games have a story that’s as simple as rescuing Princess Peach or whoever else has been kidnapped by Bowser that week, there’s really not that much to theorise and wonder about. The only big exception to that rule is the identity of Rosalina, who was introduced in Super Mario Galaxy as one of the few characters in the franchise with an actual backstory.
Rosalina’s status as a princess and similar appearance to Peach have had fans speculating that the two are related for nearly 20 years now, with theories ranging from the pair being sisters to Rosalina being the time-travelling daughter of Mario and Peach. Those theories can finally rest, as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie outright confirms the two’s relationship.
Spoilers to follow for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, if you care about that kind of thing.
Peach And Rosalina’s Relationship Has Finally Been Revealed
And Yes, It’s Exactly What You’re Thinking
In the first Mario movie, we’re given a surprising amount of hints about Peach’s background, as she reveals to Mario that she was sent to the Mushroom Kingdom as a baby (complete with an interesting star-adorned outfit), before dropping a nod to Galaxy that had everyone speculating Rosalina was somehow involved.
Those teases are followed up on at the start of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which confirms once and for all that Peach and Rosalina are sisters who live together in space. The pair get attacked at the start of the movie, causing Rosalina (who is actually Peach’s older sister) to send Peach to the Mushroom Kingdom to keep her safe.
It’s a pretty big swing considering how long Nintendo has gone without canonising the relationship between Rosalina and Peach, despite fans holding that theory ever since 2007. It’ll be interesting to see whether this familial tie will ever be acknowledged in the games, or if it’ll just be something that Nintendo continues to ignore outside of the movies.
