Starfield’s PlayStation 5 Features Have Been Revealed

Starfield’s PlayStation 5 version is almost upon us. To gear folks up for what Sony-touting gamers can expect, Bethesda has released a primer vid that breaks it all down. To be sure, there are a couple of distinctly PS5-esque implementations that I’m excited to sample. But it’s the graphics side that’s got people talking.

PSSR is in. PS5 Pro enhancements are on the table. Combined, this means that Starfield is unlikely to look anything less than, forgive the pun, but stellar for its big April 7 (re)launch.

On PlayStation 5 Pro, Starfield comes in two distinct flavors. There’s Performance Mode, which targets 60 FPS, and Quality Mode, which targets 30 FPS. Standard stuff, to be sure. But with full PSSR support packed in, Performance Mode should still look quite nice. PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution can make a sizable difference, especially in games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which remains one of the big poster boards for buying a Pro.

Bethesda points out that all PS5 owners can still take advantage of trophy support and SSD optimization, which, uh, yeah. I guess they felt the need to say something nice for people who lack a PlayStation 5 Pro, which is a lot of prospective buyers. Still, Starfield is… Starfield. It did OK on Xbox Series X, and it’ll doubtless do OK on PlayStation 5 as well, barring some unforeseen disaster. Plus, there are multiple performance modes for Xbox at this point, including a rather nice 40 fps 120hz mode that I’d love to see brought over to PS5 if possible.

As for the rest of Starfield’s PlayStation features? Here’s the rundown of DualSense’s cool functionality integrations:

  • Adaptive triggers, providing weapon resistance sensations. A lot of people dislike this stuff, but I swear by it.
  • The controller speaker can be utilized for listening to voice logs. Another thing many don’t think much about, but again, I dig it.
  • The light bar to indicate health status. Many PlayStation games use it, and it’s neat.
  • The touchpad can be pressed for quick access to menus.

All told, it’s a keen reminder for why I love PS5 DualSense controllers so much. I’m curious to see how well Starfield will do commercially on PlayStation 5, but so far, signs point to a pretty solid launch on the consumer end.
