Resident Evil 4’s Merchant Is 3 Trillion Pesetas In Debt, Capcom Reveals

It’s the third anniversary of the release of Resident Evil 4 Remake, a fantastic remake of a fantastic game. Those who have played either the remake or the original will know about the Merchant, one of the few people in Valdelobos who isn’t actively trying to kill Leon and Ada.

In celebration of the anniversary, Capcom released startling statistics on the Merchant’s enterprise, which isn’t doing nearly as well as I would’ve thought (nice spot, Automaton). According to Capcom, the Merchant has received 39 trillion pesetas from players, but has given away 43 trillion pesetas in exchange for goods.

The Merchant Needs Our Help

This represents a staggering loss of over 3.3 trillion pesetas. Now, the peseta was replaced in Spain by the euro in 2002, so converting it isn’t necessarily possible given the potential inflation rate of a disused currency over the last 24 years.

At the time, 100 pesetas was equal to €0.60, meaning 33 trillion pesetas was about 33 billion euro in 2002. Applying some extremely rough inflation calculations, we can deduce that 33 billion euro in 2002 is the equivalent of about 55 billion euro today. That’s about 63 billion dollars.

My old headline was about how Resident Evil 4’s merchant had more debt than the United States, until I found out that the U.S. is $39 trillion in debt, and I just can’t invent ratios that make sense to justify that, even if Resident Evil 4 bucks are actually priceless because they let you buy rocket launchers.

One Week After Launch, Capcom Reveals That 56 Percent Of Resident Evil Requiem Players Got The Bad Ending

Over half of Resident Evil Requiem players listened to Leon over Grace, and paid the price with the bad ending.

Speaking of which, the most expensive item the Merchant sells is the RPG, which sets Leon back 80,000 pesetas if he doesn’t have the charm that drops the price to 64,000. To pay off his debt, the Merchant would have to sell 51 million rocket launchers. I really only need the one to blow up Saddler, but I’ll buy a second just to help out my good friend.

The merchant doesn’t appear outside Valdelobos, but his enormous friend, the Duke, is on hand to assist in mercantile matters in Resident Evil Village. Unfortunately, in Requiem, transactions have been automated via a machine. It’s a sad state of affairs when a diligent merchant can’t find work in Raccoon City.
