PS6 Release Date and Price Not Decided Yet, Says Sony

Sony has revealed it’s yet to decide on a release date or price for the next-gen and eventual PS6.

President and CEO, Hiroki Totoki, shared the news during the Q&A session of the firm’s Q4 fiscal year 2025 earnings briefing, responding to a question on whether the increased costs of components will have an impact on the console.

Totoki said (via VGC): “We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices. So we would like to really observe and follow the situation.”

Due to the expected short supply in fiscal year 2027, Sony expects the price of memory to remain high. “So under that assumption, we must think carefully what we will do.” One consideration is “new potential ways to sell the PS6”, according to VGC’s reporting.

“We would like to think about various simulations, including changing business models to come up with the best solution and strategy,” said Totoki.

Reports from external outlets speaking to sources claim Sony has been targeting a PS6 launch in 2027, with a handheld device to go with it. Xbox’s own next-gen system, currently codenamed Project Helix, is also reportedly set for a release next year.

However, it doesn’t seem like the current PlayStation community feels it’s ready for a new console just yet. In a Push Square Poll from earlier in the year, which drew over 4,000 votes, most PS5 owners said they think a PS6 should come out in either 2028 or 2029. Only 11% of Push Square readers believe the PS6 should launch in the year Sony is supposedly aiming for, 2027.

As for the PS6’s price, there are the fears of a $1,000 console on the market, but some suggestions point to it being cheaper. Prominent hardware leaker KeplerL2 has indicated the system could be a bit cheaper than expected, but you’ll still be paying the equivalent of what a PS5 Pro costs today.

Of course, this is what Sony has to share regarding the PS6 publicly. As it discusses the console and its release internally, it’ll have a much better roadmap to launch, with price suggestions to go with a target release window. Those details might not be set in stone yet, but Sony will have a good idea of what it’s doing in actuality.
