Magic: The Gathering – Secrets Of Strixhaven Commander Deck Guide

The mystical colleges of Magic: The Gathering return in five new Commander decks, each with its own unique play style and stylish leader.

Commander Breakdown

Rootha, Mastering the Moment Secrets of Strixhaven MTG card.

The Commander for this deck is Rootha, Mastering the Moment, an Orc Sorcerer who creates a red/blue elemental with flying and haste at the start of combat on your turn. Its power and toughness are equal to the highest mana-cost spell (sorcery or instant) you cast in your first main phase.

Rootha doesn’t display any other mana colors on its card, meaning any cards you add to the deck must be red, blue, or a combination of both.

For example, if you were to hard-cast Volcanic Salvo for 12 mana in your first main phase, Rootha would then create a 12/12 elemental creature token with haste and flying.

This will force your opponents to be ready to react any time that Rootha is on the board during your turn.

Deck Theme & Strategy

Prismari Artistry Sorcery Cards MTG Secrets of Strixhaven.

Between the ability of the main Commander of this deck, Rootha, and the hints we are given on the packaging of “Cast Splashy Spells” and “Create Elemental Attackers”, we have a good idea of how the Prismari Atristry deck will play.

You’re expected to be casting spells during your first main phase to activate Rootha’s ability, then it’s a case of preserving your spells between turns to either protect your elemental tokens or flood the board with elemental creatures to maximize your damage.

With cards like Goldspan Dragon in the deck, you’ll also generate treasure tokens, a great way to make sure you’re not burning through mana too quickly, and letting you cast more expensive spells to generate dangerous elemental tokens.

Upgrades

Prismari Artistry Upgrades MTG Commander Deck.

We won’t be suggesting the removal of any cards here, as those may vary based on your playstyle and preferences, but we will list some cards that fit the theme of the deck and mesh well with the Commander’s ability.

Vivi Ornitier

This powerful card from the Final Fantasy set is an Izzet staple and will fit in well with this spell-slinging theme of Prismari Atristry.

It can add any mix of red and blue mana equal to its total power, and you may place a +1/+1 counter on it any time you cast a noncreature spell.

This card can get very powerful very quickly, and it tops up your mana pool so you can cast even more spells as a bonus, although it can only do this once per turn. There’s a good reason this card is banned in Standard, but thankfully it’s free to cause mayhem in Commander, for now.

Twinflame Travelers

This elemental creature from Lorwyn Eclipsed triggers the abilities of any other elementals you have an additional time.

While Rootha’s elemental tokens don’t have an ability, and Rootha herself isn’t an elemental, you can still pack some powerful elementals with useful abilities into the deck, which will then activate an additional time when paired with Twinflame Travelers.

Galvanic Iteration

This two-mana instant spell lets you copy your next spell and choose a new target for it.

Better yet, it has flashback, meaning you can cast it from your graveyard, this time costing three mana, before then exiling the card.

This card absolutely tore up the Standard meta when it was first released, and still has a home in many Commander decks in 2026.

Sorcerer Class

This Class enchantment lets you draw two cards, then discard two cards when it hits the battlefield. At level two, it lets you tap creatures to add red or blue mana to cast instant or sorcery spells only, or to upgrade the class.

Finally, at level three, every time you cast an instant or sorcery spell, Sorcerer Class deals damage to each opponent that is equal to the number of sorcery and instant spells you’ve cast that turn.
