It looks like Jack Black wants to continue his run of starring in video game movie adaptations. After starring in Minecraft, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and its upcoming sequel, the actor has shown interest in starring in another beloved series, although it’s very different from what he’s done so far.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Black said that he would love to star in a live-action adaptation of Sega’s Yakuza series. Ryu Ga Gotoku, Like a Dragon, or Yakuza, whatever you prefer calling it, is one of Sega’s longest-running video game IPs and has already had a couple of live-action adaptations. Unfortunately, none of them have been quite as successful as the games. Perhaps Jack Black is the missing ingredient.

“So, I’m going to throw my hat in that ring. I don’t know if there [are] any parts for me, like a portly American, but talk to me. Sega, give me a jingle,” said Black in the interview. Of course, finding a role for him wouldn’t be very easy, as there aren’t too many characters from the series he would be able to play.
While Black’s mastery in comedy would fit right into Yakuza’s often corny tone, a live-action appearance would appear forced for a “portly American” such as himself. However, if we do get an animated adaptation, Sega might be willing to offer him a supporting role of some kind. Much like Jennifer English for video games, Jack Black seems to be a catalyst for video game adaptations to make money.
As for the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the original cast will be significantly expanded upon, with the likes of Glen Powell coming aboard as Fox McCloud from the Star Fox series. He joins Brie Larson as Rosalina, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., and Donald Glover as Yoshi. To add to that, the movie will also have two post-credit scenes, as it will probably look to expand into a trilogy.
