The PlayStation Portable, better known as the PSP, was a divisive handheld console. While the idea of a Portable PlayStation sounded amazing at the time, many complained about its battery life and dramatic drop in quality for some titles. Regardless, it was one of the first of its kind that wasn’t by Nintendo, and it’s worth celebrating. However, we’re not sure why Linda McMahon is celebrating it.
Some of you may know Linda McMahon as the US Secretary of Education, while others may know her as the wife of WWE boss Vince McMahon. For some reason, she decided to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the PSP’s launch in the US, and much like Linda herself when she crossed paths with Stone Cold Steve Austin, the internet has been left stunned.
Why Is Linda McMahon Celebrating The PSP?
“In 2005, everything changed! The “PlayStation Portable” (PSP) was released and it did more than make gaming portable… it made entertainment personal, mobile, and always within reach. It was the beginning of life on the go,” wrote McMahon, or her social media team, on Twitter, along with an image that wasn’t of the original PlayStation.
We’re just as confused about this tweet as you or everyone in the comments, as there’s plenty to question here. Most importantly, why? Why is the Secretary of Education tweeting about the PSP at all? Perhaps it’s a way of appealing to gamers, and we know that Donald Trump’s presidency has been trying to do that for quite a while.
Secondly, the image used in the tweet doesn’t contain a PSP at all, just an original PlayStation, two controllers and a memory card. Clearly, whoever thought this up has no idea what a PSP even is, and may have confused it with the home console. So much for appealing to gamers.
Most importantly, and with all due respect to the PSP, it wasn’t really the console that made gaming portable. The Game Boy came out in 1989, and there were other handhelds before it too. There’s even a community note on the tweet mentioning it.
In all likelihood, McMahon’s social media team probably came across the fact that the PSP’s anniversary was coming up and made a post without doing even a bit of research.
