God of War Sons of Sparta may have received fairly mixed reviews, but it seems to be a surefire success for PlayStation, as it’s got a respectable 14th place in Circana’s February sales report.
When God of War Sons of Sparta was shadowdropped out of nowhere at last month’s State of Play, it seemed like a dream come true for fans of the series who have been waiting for the series to return. In practise, though, Sons of Sparta seems to have been just fine for a lot of players, as it currently sits as the worst-reviewed God of War game at a middling 64 on Metacritic.
Sons of Sparta at least faired much better on the PlayStation Store, as it has a 4.1 out of 5 stars.
Even with those mixed reviews and some particularly harsh comments from series creator David Jaffe, it seems like it might have quietly been quite successful for PlayStation. Sales data for February has been shared by Circana, and Sons of Sparta has a strong spot among the month’s best-sellers.
Sons Of Sparta Was The Sixth Best Selling PlayStation Game Of February
Even Without A Massive Budget, Sons Of Sparta Did Nicely
As pointed out by Push Square, Circana’s sales data for February shows that God of War Sons of Sparta was the 14th best-selling game that month, beating out Ghost of Yotei, Forza Horizon 5, Spider-Man 2, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and Resident Evil Generation Pack. To be fair, most of the games on that list are hangers on, but it did beat My Hero Academia: All’s Justice, which released in the same month.
When it comes to PlayStation games specifically, Sons of Sparta was the sixth best-selling game of the month, and actually managed to beat the eternal hanger-on, GTA 5. It wasn’t quite enough to beat some of the month’s biggest new games like Resident Evil Requiem, Mario Tennis Fever, and Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, but it’s still got a solid spot.
Considering Sons of Sparta was likely made with a fairly low budget (especially compared to every other PlayStation game out there) and drew in a lot of eyes for being a big shadow drop, it’s hard to see it as anything other than a success for Sony. While it didn’t light the world on fire with its reviews, Sons of Sparta has done its job nicely.
