Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Could Take the Story Even Further with DLC

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 DLC

Square Enix hasn’t ruled out the idea of expanding upon the Final Fantasy 7 Remake saga even further, with the concept of DLC for Part 3 being floated around by director Naoki Hamaguchi.

Our knee-jerk reaction to this is that the developer is already stretching Final Fantasy 7’s story beats to breaking point by splitting its narrative across three games, and so adding even more content via DLC seems like overkill.

But we still don’t know the true scope of Part 3, so we don’t want to jump to any conclusions. A supposed expansion could take the shape of anything at this point; from a game adaptation of Advent Children to some kind of Dirge of Cerberus revival.

We better shut up before Square Enix actually starts listening…

Anyway, in an interview with German outlet ntower (as translated by GamesRadar), Hamaguchi explains that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth didn’t get any DLC because the team wanted to move straight on to the sequel.

“Within the context of a long-term trilogy, we concluded that running development of the second instalment’s DLC in parallel with the third instalment would inevitably affect the third game’s schedule and overall quality,” he clarifies.

But given that Part 3 is set to be the trilogy’s final act, there may be room for additional ideas to take shape. However, that kind of post-launch support will apparently come down to player demand.

“As for DLC beyond the third instalment, I believe that will ultimately depend on how strongly fans continue to support Final Fantasy 7 as both a title and a franchise,” Hamaguchi teases.

“If there is significant demand, we’d certainly be open to exploring those [DLC] possibilities proactively.”

Again, though, we need to see what Part 3 is actually trying to do first. We assume that it’ll be the biggest game in the trilogy because of how much stuff it has to cover, both from a gameplay and story perspective — and we would’t be surprised if it’s a more open-ended experience thanks to the introduction of an airship.

Fortunately, we may not have long to wait. Rumour has it that Part 3 is gearing up for a reveal in the relatively near future.
