If Samsung Messages is your preferred way to send texts, check delivery updates, or receive 2FA codes on your Galaxy phone, we have bad news: Samsung is discontinuing the app in July.
The decision was announced via an end-of-service notice on the company website. Samsung didn’t provide a reason for the change, but recommended users switch to Google Messages.
However, not all Galaxy users need to take action. Google Messages has been the default messaging service since the Galaxy S21 series, SammyGuru notes, and those running Android 11 or earlier will continue receiving support for Samsung Messages even after the deadline.
If you don’t fall into either category, you can download Google Messages. The first time you launch the app, you’ll see a banner nudging you to set it as the default SMS app. Once you see that, tap Set default SMS app > Google Messages > Set as default. You can also make the change later in Settings.
The biggest advantage Google Messages has over its Samsung counterpart is support for RCS. You’ll also get access to some Gemini features, such as smart replies and photo remixing.

The end of support for Samsung Messages may vary by model. “Please check the Samsung Messages app for the exact date when service will be discontinued,” the company says.
The update also brings bad news for those using the Galaxy Watch 3 or earlier. These watches run on Tizen OS, which doesn’t support the Google Messages app. “Therefore, after the discontinuation of Samsung Messages, those older Tizen OS watches will no longer be able to see the full message conversation history on their watch; however, those watches will still enable the user to read and send text messages,” Samsung says.
