CinemaCon is in full swing this week, which means major motion picture distributors are out in style, pitching their plans for the future of theatrical entertainment. Warner Bros., Sony, Universal, you name ‘em—and exhibitors and investors alike have been keen to hear what David Ellison’s Paramount-Skydance would bring to the table. The son of Oracle founder Larry Ellison has, after all, repeatedly committed to a thirty-films-per-year theatrical slate if and when he gets his hands on WB. Which is… a bold proposition.
Well, we got lots of name-drops again for films in development. Star Trek, Transforms, GI Joe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, all in the pipeline. Bigger updates came in hot for stuff like Top Gun 3, which is sure to perform well at the box office. And then there’s Call of Duty, helmed by Yellowstone guru (and so much more) Taylor Sheridan, whose countless success stories on Paramount+ have no doubt galvanized Ellison and his gang to believe in this flick’s potential.
June 30
Mark the date. Or don’t. June 30, 2028 is, at present, when the Call of Duty feature film will hit theaters. Ellison has promised, while parading about at CinemaCon today, that a 45-day theatrical release window is Paramount-Skydance’s plan. In a world with ever-shrinking windows, that’s a pretty big period of time for Call of Duty to potentially rack up the cash, assuming, of course, it’s any good.
Taylor Sheridan is co-writing the screenplay, and Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights, Battleship, The Kingdom) is directing. At CinemaCon, Peter Berg unveiled a “sizzle reel” for Call of Duty, as Deadline reports. Rock band The White Stripes’ famous “Seven Nation Army” song played over what was almost entirely video game footage, so no, you’re not missing anything.
