As is the case with any new Disney Lorcana set, the biggest chase cards are the Iconic Rares. A super-limited variant of two selected cards that has a hit rate believed to be in excess of one in 1,500 packs. Thanks to the latest Lorecast, we now know which two cards are getting the Iconic Rare treatment in Wilds Unknown, and they are easily the best ones since Fabled, even if the choice of characters may raise some eyebrows.
Buzz, Jungle Ranger, and Merida, Formidable Archer, are Wilds Unknown cards that have been assigned as the Iconic Rares for the set. You might be wondering why not Woody and Buzz, given that the duo is front and center of the set artwork and just generally an iconic pairing like Mickey and Minnie, but there’s a very good reason why the partnership has been broken up… for now.
An Unusual Tag Team
Buzz and Merida aren’t exactly the classic Pixar partnership we’ve come to expect. Still, perhaps it’s the one we need, as these stunning Iconic Rare card treatments are our favorite since the variant debuted in Fabled.
Each of these cards depicts the characters navigating through or seemingly fighting against the vines that have been seen in much of the Wilds Unknown artwork. It’s no coincidence that the next set is also called Attack of the Vine, right?
Regardless, these treatments are second to none, with the delicate lore counter foil meshing incredibly well with the strong artwork. These cards also make the most of various shades of green, both on the characters and the background images. In the case of Buzz, Jungle Ranger, the lime green text is a bold choice, as it could easily get lost, even with the darker green outline, but the Merida, Formidable Archer card plays it safe with a more silver/grey text color.
Where’s Woody?
With Buzz being joined by Merida as the Iconic Rares for Wilds Unknown, you might be wondering where Woody is. Well, he’s getting a special card treatment too, but it’s as a promo card. It’s not just any promo, though; it’s the Set Championship promo, with two variants of this promo being printed, one for participants and one for those who make the top eight.
It’s going to be a sore spot for some that the Iconic pairing isn’t Woody & Buzz, but we’re okay with it, as it’s not like Woody has been ignored entirely, and this incentivizes participation in the set championship, which is just what a paper-only TCG needs.
