Black Ops 7 Will Soon Add Dave Chappelle

Remember way back in September, when we learned that the then-upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 almost got several rather absurd skins? Remember how many players cheered Activision’s decision to nix them after all the backlash over the increasingly outrageous crossover skins in recent titles?

As recently as early March, Activision and developer Treyarch committed to the bit, standing by the choice to keep Black Ops 7 more thematic—to allow it to possess more of its own identity. Which is why the recent announcement that, checks notes, controversial comedian Dave Chappelle is en route to the game isn’t exactly going over well with people in possession of basic memory skills.

Half Baked Effort?

When Call of Duty: Black Ops 7’s second season debuted several weeks back, there was much ado over the decisive lack of collaboration material. The official account proudly proclaimed at the time that they “love doing collabs, but [they] want to make sure it’s the right fit.” In the current climate, where hardcore CoD fans appear to be somewhat firmly of the belief that the Fortnite-esque crossover extravaganzas have gone overboard in recent years, that message was heard loud and clear to all sorts of good cheer.

Fast-forward to today. The internet’s bursting with tweets pointing out the alleged hypocrisy over announcing Dave Chappelle, of all people, popping up in Black Ops 7 on April 20. Now, devil’s advocate (?), but I don’t think Treyarch’s previous statement is contradicted by this at all. Clearly, they do, indeed, “love doing collabs.” Is this “the right fit”? OK, yes, so, I see how that’s being perceived as contradictory. But ultimately, alas, that is up to them. It’s their choice what constitutes that fit.

We may think, well, maybe something like Solid Snake works better than a stand-up comedian and his critically-panned 1998 stoner comedy. I would go so far as to say we have a sterling point. But what’s done is done. The Chappelle Show is coming for us all.
