Amid price increases across the board for consoles and RAM, one way to play has just become quite a bit cheaper. The ROG Xbox Ally is currently on sale, bringing its price down to just $500, but there’s no telling how long the handheld PC is going to remain at that lower price.
Amazon Has Cut The Price Of The Xbox Ally
Xbox teamed up with ASUS last year to release two ROG Ally consoles. There’s the Xbox Ally X, the one that made all the headlines due to its $1000 price tag, and the less powerful Xbox Ally. That’s the one that’s currently available for a lot less than usual right now, and for half the price of its more powerful sibling.
Xbox Reportedly Canceled Its Original Handheld As It Didn’t Believe It Could Sell Ten Million Units
AMD wanted Xbox to commit to selling ten million units, and the Steam Deck gave it cold feet.
Amazon has cut the price of the Xbox Ally from its $600 MSRP to just $499.99. You might read that it’s the less powerful version of the console and move on, but despite its lower specs, this is a pretty great deal for the level of handheld you’re getting. Especially when the price of pretty much everything else in the video game sphere is on the up.
The Xbox Ally Is A Great Steam Deck Alternative
The Xbox Ally has 16GB of RAM, which is the same as a Steam Deck, an equivalent handheld that has become notoriously difficult to find due to Valve getting hit by the same issues as other hardware developers around the world. If you’re in the market for a Steam Deck but you’re struggling to find one, this is the perfect alternative, particularly if you’re an Xbox gamer who wants to start bridging the gap between console and PC.
There are drawbacks to opting for the cheaper of the Xbox Ally models, of course. This standard edition of the Xbox/ASUS team-up only has 512GB of storage, although that can be increased if you need more. It’s also not going to run high-end games as well as the Ally X, otherwise the more expensive console wouldn’t cost twice as much. The Ally can run most games perfectly well and in 1080p, just don’t go expecting a PC-level performance from it when you fire up something like Crimson Desert.
There’s no telling just how long the Ally is going to be available for this price. There’s a chance that this is a permanent price cut, and in an attempt to sell more of them, Xbox has reduced the price of the Ally to $500 for good. It’s a smart move if so, not only because Steam Decks are becoming increasingly more difficult to find, but because it’s a price drop – and a big one – just days after PlayStation upped the price of its PS5s, tacking on an additional $150 to the PS5 Pro.
