The Sands Of Time Remake Is Being Taken On By Fans

After a long and arduous development process, featuring multiple studios, Ubisoft finally decided to cancel Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. While the project was already in development hell, the move came as a part of a major restructuring for the studio, where other projects were also canceled.

This obviously didn’t go down well with fans of the series, who thought that the IP was finally back from the dead after The Lost Crown and Rogue Prince. Unfortunately, most think that this cancellation marked the end of the series as a whole. However, it seems that some members of the community aren’t letting it go, and are planning to develop the remake themselves.

As spotted by GamesRadar, the Prince of Persia: Community Remake Project is an attempt by fans to recreate the remake they were robbed of. “The Prince of Persia community has come together to create its own project following the cancellation of the Sands of Time Remake,” said the announcement. “This is not a traditional remake, but a large-scale mod aiming to replace most 3D models with high-quality assets and introduce global illumination through path tracing technology.”

As with most community projects like this, it’s essentially a high-quality texture rehaul mod which will be volunteer-driven. Since that’s the case, there aren’t any strict deadlines and the whole thing will be a massive passion project. There aren’t too many details yet, but the team is already looking for artists and programmers. There will be a website with more details, but you can join the Discord channel for now.

Community projects like this are pretty common for beloved video game series’. The two biggest ones that come to mind are Skyblivion and Path to Menzoberranzan. The first a project that aims to recreate The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion within Skyrim, and the latter is a project to recreate the titular Drow city and other locations from Baldur’s Gate 2, using the mod tools of BG3.
