Momentum is a serious thing, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has it in spades. Because one week after the movie blasted to the biggest opening of 2026, it now stands as the year’s highest-grossing movie. It might not out-beat the financial prowess of the original The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but it’s more than holding its own.
As first reported by Variety, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has now grossed $629 million at the global box office, pushing past Ryan Gosling’s space drama Project Hail Mary. Where The Super Mario Galaxy Movie took its biggest winnings is at the international box office, with the film netting $83.5 million from 81 territories.
So far, the international box office has powered the animated film, with $320 million in profit against $308 million from North America. In particular, per Variety, Mexico, as well as the United Kingdom and Ireland have had the biggest draws at $47.8 million and $37.4 million, respectively.

Nintendo and Illumination sure look like they’re about to debut the Super Smash Bros Cinematic Universe.
There’s a good chance the film will climb to the $1 billion mark by the time all is said and done. The first movie finished with $1.36 billion at the global box office, so consider Galaxy roughly halfway there in its second week.
Even If It Doesn’t Surpass The Original, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Is Still An All-Time Success
With that global gross of $629 million, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie now sits in third place among the highest-grossing video game adaptations of all-time. At this point, anything more is all gravy.
The No. 1 movie of all-time is its predecessor, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and No. 2 is A Minecraft Movie, with $960 million. In the process of netting $629 million, it passed the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Detective Pikachu, Warcraft and Rampage.
As Variety noted, $1 billion isn’t out of the equation, so when all is said and done, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will, at worst, be No. 2 in the all-time rankings.
Like A Minecraft Movie before it, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was not lauded by critics at release. However, it resonated with its audience, largely families and kids, to own the box office. Which is to say, never ever doubt the brand power of Nintendo and Mario.
