It’s been a long wait, but it looks like Grand Theft Auto 6’s latest release date of November 19 is going to stick. After years of waiting, and multiple delays, it looks like we’re finally going to play it towards the end of the year. But what took so long? From what we’ve seen in the trailers, GTA 6 may be unlike any game we’ve ever played, and that kind of fidelity takes time.
However, a former Rockstar dev thinks there’s more to it than that. Rob Carr worked as an audio engineer on GTA 5 and LA Noire, and he thinks the reason why GTA 6 has taken so long is because Rockstar may have entirely rebuilt its Rage engine for the game. That certainly would explain the lengthy development cycle.
Why Did GTA 6 Take So Long To Make?
Speaking on the Kiwi Talkz podcast with Reece Reilly, Carr spoke about his time at the studio, how GTA 6 may take inspiration from previous titles, and how the current devs will be handling it (thanks, GamesRadar). He also speculated on why the game has been in development for so long. Carr believes that Rockstar rebuilt the Rage engine entirely.
“I know nothing about it, other than the fact that they probably will have – given the time frame of how long it’s taken them to get to this stage – they’ve probably rebuilt the entirety of the Rage Engine.” he said. “That’s the only thing I can say with real genuine confidence.” Of course, he isn’t involved with the game in any way, so this is just an educated guess.
“I’ll be amazed if they didn’t because the architecture of technology has advanced significantly since GTA 5, which again, easy to forget, that was three generations ago. That was the last one to be released on 360 and PS3,” he added. He definitely has a point there, as the trailers for GTA 6 look far better than anything from the previous games.
