In this list, we’ve taken a look at every Pokemon in each of the 20 Wild Zones in Pokemon Legends: Z-A and picked out one Pokemon pal you shouldn’t move on without. Explore the Wild Zones day and night to catch some of the strongest Pokemon in each Zone.

We don’t have to talk about how bizarre Mega Starmie looks; it’s still one of the best Water-type Megas introduced in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. And besides, don’t you want to watch that weird little guy wiggle around out there capitalizing on its stat gains in its Mega form? We do.
The fun all starts in the Vert District’s Wild Zone Two, when you seek out and catch a Staryu during the nighttime hours. Begin training it early on, and you’ll be ready to evolve it with a Water Stone as soon as you’re able.

Who wouldn’t love to have the de facto mascot for Pokemon as a brand on their team? Anyone seeking out the original Pokemon pal can find one as early as Wild Zone Three, in the garden section to the southeast of the Zone.
As soon as you can get your hands on a Thunder Stone, you’ll be able to evolve this fan favorite Pokemon into its final form, Raichu. It’s got not one but two different Mega versions to play with in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, so pick your favorite and enjoy the power boosts.

Gastly is one of the original Ghost-type Pokemon, helping to debut the type back in the original first-generation titles. Its evolution line packs progressively more powerful punches until you get all the way up to Gengar via trading with a friend you know will give back your ghost.

But you can’t start using the top-tier spooky spirit without first catching and training a Gastly, which you can do beginning in the fourth Wild Zone in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. The sooner you begin training it up, the sooner you’ll have access to one of the strongest Special Attackers in the game.

Catching an Abra is easier said than done, what with these elusive little guys usually using Teleport almost immediately to leave the battle and vanish on their first turn, but should you manage to get your hands on one in Wild Zone Five, you’ll be able to begin leveling it up into one heck of a Pokemon.
Mega Alakazam is easily one of the best Psychic-type Pokemon in all of Legends: Z-A, but you can’t begin using it and all its extra spoons before you’ve gotten either an Abra or Kadabra first. By catching one early, you’ll have access to Mega Alakazam even sooner.

It’s always kind of funny telling newcomers to the series that catching a Magikarp is all but imperative if they’d like to have access to one of the strongest Water-types in the whole game, what with it only able to Flop for the most part.
When it hits level 20, though, you’ll see it evolve into Gyarados. Even without having it hold a Mega Gyaradosite (don’t mind that it doesn’t have hands with which to hold), you’ve got a staggeringly strong Pokemon. The sooner you catch the Magikarp from which it’ll evolve, the sooner you can begin trying to get the best stats on what’ll become one of your starting lineup Pokemon.

We love seeing all the creative ways the Pokemon team found for wild Pokemon to be hanging out in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and our pick for the best Pokemon to catch in Wild Zone Seven can be found hanging out very literally from the trees around the exterior of the plaza.
If you didn’t already catch a Kakuna a few Wild Zones back for completion’s sake, we’d recommend grabbing one now, since Mega Beedrill gets a massive boost to its Attack stat, and it becomes wildly fast as well. Now’s the time to start training your Kakuna if you haven’t already!

Who doesn’t love having a Pokemon who’s just a silly little guy? Drilbur is cute little Mole Pokemon you’ll find beginning in Wild Zone Eight, and though you’ll have plenty of good Ground-types to choose from here, it’ll evolve into one of the best in the game.

Sure, you can catch an Excadrill outright later on in the game, but catching a Drilbur now and leveling it up to 31 will give you early access to one of the strongest Ground-types in the game, especially when Megas are considered.

Mawile is but one of the Pokemon you’ll bump into while you’re exploring the rooftop areas of Wild Zone Nine over in the Magenta District, along with its equally eerie counterpart Sableye. While both make for good picks, as Megas who don’t have to evolve before they can use their Mega Stone, we’d give preference to Mawile.
Not only does Mega Mawile look extra spooky, it gains defensive bonuses that’ll have your rivals grinding their teeth in frustration as you tank hit after hit. It all begins by catching the regular base form of Mawile over in Wild Zone Nine.

We know Bellsprout is a bit of a funny recommendation for the best Pokemon that you need to make sure you capture in the Bleu District’s Wild Zone Ten, but we’d recommend beginning to level one up sooner than later.
You can evolve your Weepinbell, which Bellsprout becomes at level 21, into Victreebell as soon as you get a Leaf Stone. While fans were amused by its design, Mega Victreebell is one of the greatest (albeit probably the strangest-looking) Grass-type Megas in the game, so it’s well worth starting now toward getting one if you haven’t already.
