Sony And Tencent’s “Horizon Clone” Lawsuit Is Over, Game Delisted

It seems the legal troubles between Sony and Tencent may be over for now. Sparked by a game called Light of Motiram, the lawsuit, which alleged Tencent’s game was a clone of PlayStation’s Horizon series, has been settled, and the game has been pulled from Steam and the Epic Games Store.

The Game Post has provided an update on the lawsuit, which was filed by Sony earlier this year after it and the rest of the world were given their first look at Light of Motiram. The two parties have reached a settlement, and although the finer details of what was agreed between them aren’t entirely clear, you can no longer find Light of Motiram on PC storefronts.

Light Of Motiram Has Been Delisted

Despite the settlement, Light of Motiram’s sudden disappearance from Steam and the Epic Games Store suggests that whatever was agreed upon between Tencent and Sony, the game is not going to be released as planned. At least not in the form that it has existed until now. At best for Tencent, it’s back to the drawing board to try and turn the game into something that doesn’t resemble Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West.

Considering just how similar Light of Motiram was to the Horizon games, I find it difficult to foresee how the game can be tweaked to that extent without starting over. Tencent giving up on the game entirely after the hassle it has caused seems the more likely option, although that may well depend on how much money has been pumped into it so far.

Sony Turned Down An Offer To Make A Horizon Game With Tencent

Sony filed the lawsuit against Tencent after referring to Light of Motiram as a “slavish clone”, and it’s easy to see why. The company argued that people might see the game and assume it was connected to the Horizon series. That’s exactly what happened when Light of Motiram was revealed, and I was one of many who saw its imagery and assumed legal proceedings would follow soon after.

The lawsuit revealed that this saga actually began in 2024 when Tencent approached Sony about collaborating on a Horizon game. Sony wasn’t interested, but it seems Tencent went ahead and made the game anyway without its blessing. Light of Motiram was pretty much Horizon without Aloy, but it will need to be a lot more different than that if it’s going to make a comeback after all of this.
