PS5 Hits 84.2 Million Sold, Surpassing The Xbox 360 And Game Boy Advance

PlayStation has released its latest financial report, which tracks console and software sales up until September 30, 2025, confirming that the PS5 has now sold 84.2 million units during its lifetime. That moves the latest PlayStation console into the top ten best-selling consoles of all time.

The PS5’s lifetime sales were sitting at 80.3 million before today’s update added almost four million more consoles to its total. Those additional sales have not only moved it up to ninth in the overall standings, but it now means the PS5 has outsold the Game Boy Advance and, perhaps more importantly, the Xbox 360.

I say more importantly because with the 360 now in its wake, the PS5 has now outsold every Xbox console ever made. The Xbox 360 was a high point for Xbox hardware and is the studio’s most successful console by quite a distance. It outsold its closest in-house competitor by almost 30 million units, and with the Xbox Series X|S still 50 million short of where the 360 ended its run, the latest Xbox console is never going to overtake it.

The PS5 Still Has Four More PlayStations To Try And Catch Up With

The 360 is also the closest Xbox has ever come to winning a generation in console sales alone, falling less than four million short of the PS3. Speaking of, the PS5 hasn’t quite outsold the PS3 yet, but it seems very likely that it will have done three months from now. The newest PlayStation is 3.2 million units away, and with the PS5 still selling well five years into its run, and the current quarter including holiday sales, it seems almost certain it will have leapfrogged the PS3 by the start of 2026.

Overtaking the GBA’s sales is impressive, too, of course, but it’s going to be a while before the PS5 outsells another Nintendo console. In fact, other than the PS3, the PS5 now has a gap to bridge before it can continue to climb the best-selling console ranks. After the PS3, which ended its run on 87.4 million consoles sold, we reach the top seven, all of which have sold 100 million or more.

Every PlayStation home console outside of the PS3 has sold more than 100 million consoles, so you have to imagine the PS5 eventually reaching that milestone is the bare minimum for Sony. The PS5 is currently tracking roughly two million consoles behind the PS4, which had sold more than 86 million consoles by the time it turned five. Since the PS4 has sold 117.2 million consoles, it seems very likely the PS5 will comfortably clear 100 million sold eventually.

Even though the PS5 has now surpassed the lifetime sales of the GBA, Nintendo will be relieved that PlayStation didn’t find more PS2 sales figures down the back of the couch. Nintendo updated its own sales numbers last week, revealing the Switch has now sold 154.1 million consoles and counting. When it started to look like the Switch might outsell the PS2, PlayStation tacked on an additional five million sales to its final total, moving it from 155 million to 160 million.
