Update []:
IO Interactive has officially released the first 13-or-so minutes of 007 First Light.
This is a reaction to the recent news that some physical copies of the game have reached fans days early, leading to potential spoilers for the game’s introduction.
Fortunately, these early copies won’t be able to leak much of the game at all, as they will need to download a day one patch in order to access most of the campaign.
Even so, IOI has shown off the opening moments of the game’s first chapter, which you can watch here:
Obviously the game is very nearly here, releasing officially on 27th May, with 24 hours early access if you pre-order.
We imagine most will just want to wait until then to get a first-hand experience.
Original Story: Uh oh! It seems MI6 has some leaks to plug, because 007 First Light has broken containment, with some physical copies being sent out before the official release date.
Usually, this is a problem for many people eagerly awaiting a game’s release, because it can lead to swathes of spoilers appearing online before they have a chance to play for themselves.
However, it seems as though the version of the game that’s shipped on disc doesn’t actually allow you to access very much.
The above X user claims to have their copy of 007 First Light, and while they’re able to boot up the game and apparently start the campaign, it’s been confirmed elsewhere that the vast majority of the story isn’t on the disc.
In a Q&A video from IO Interactive, a fan asked whether the game requires a constant online connection, or can be played offline.
“No, it’s not necessarily always online, you have to download the first patch to get the actual game,” says the developer. “Once you’ve downloaded that, you can pull out your plug and play it offline if you want.”
So, anybody with an early copy of the game doesn’t have access to the full campaign. In fact, those who buy the game physically will be required to download the launch day patch in order to play it properly.
What that means is, despite the early distribution, you’re unlikely to see many spoilers before 007 First Light’s arrival on 27th May.
