Listen. I am one of curry’s most stalwart defenders. I could eat it every night for months without growing tired of it, especially if it’s Japanese-style. My social media accounts’ profiles include the words, “Cats, curry, cafe con leche.” Because all three are integral to my identity, you see. Because I friggin’ love curry. (And cats, and cafe con leche.)
When Taunie first showcased her bizarre spin on Japanese curry in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, I did not react as the game’s script expected me to do so. I noted the odd tower-esque shape, but it was still curry. I didn’t care. I didn’t even register that it was held aloft by the three-pillar structure of a trio of croissants until one of the dialogue options pointed it out. Whatever. Eat around them.
The internet at-large, however, does appear to have responded to the oddly-presented dish as the game anticipated. Which makes this story a total “ew” moment for some of you, but personally, I’m all in.
Curry a la Taunie
“I am so normal about this game,” declares Redditor WaterrSheep. “So normal, in fact, that I made Taunie’s curry. It’s honestly not that bad flavour/texture wise but the curry to rice ratio is so terrible I had to go back and add more curry afterwards.” Yeah, I could see that. But the rice is curry-soaked. It’s perfect rice. I wouldn’t mind!

The top comment goes to hiimnew007: “That looks awful. Fantastic job!” No, it doesn’t. OK, enough about me. Let’s get to the meat and potatoes. Someone else jotted down what’s sure to work, straight down to the croissants. And, frankly, it’s almost identical to how I prepare my own curry. Oops, this is about me again. (That tip about baking soda is a gem; thank you!)
The OP themselves then replied, confirming that their idea was super-close:
Pretty much exactly what I did except I used the hot curry block!!! Also for the rice formation, I used a standard ikea plastic cup and packed the rice in there before smacking it upside down onto my plate.
Oh and the croissants are just Pillsbury croissants because I’m a college student and did not have time to make them from scratch.
This isn’t even the first time someone’s attempted this endeavour and posted the results to Reddit. As you can see above, the very GodKingofTurtles themself took up arms two months ago, shortly after Z-A’s launch. You know what? This, I’m afraid of. The tower shape was forged via gelatin, and… no. Just no.
As for the more recently-prepared recipe, gelatin doesn’t factor, but worship does. Someone asked how WaterrSheep kept it together, and their answer’s pretty good: “Packing the rice into the cup and prayers.” An ingenious blend of pragmatic know-how and religious zeal.
