You can get Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition – Switch 2 Edition more cheaply if you purchase Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition for the original Switch and then upgrade for $4.99 USD. And, yes. That is one heck of an unwieldy name. But here we are. And $45 USD for the Wii U’s best game and 2025’s terrific port? Plus the Switch 2’s updated visuals and 60FPS? Hello? What a steal.
Except maybe not so much. By and large, the game looks much improved. That’s my personal experience speaking. And the frame rate boost obviously speaks for itself. But here’s the thing. I’ve been playing my Switch 1 file on Switch 2 via my TV. And I’m still seeing some of the things that people are talking about. In handheld mode, it’s apparently all the more apparent.
How apparent? And how egregious? Enough that some players are requesting refunds for the upgrade cost… and Nintendo is, allegedly, providing them with minimal questions asked.
At Least Van Gogh Wouldn’t Have Minded
If you ask around, a lot of people are very happy with Xenoblade Chronicles X’s cheaply-purchasable Switch 2 glow-up. Good for ‘em. Like I said, I’m mostly happy, myself. But once you see certain things, you truly can’t unsee them. Check out the above video analysis for a good look. And check this out. This is where my Van Gogh comment stems from. It’s not exactly an original thought, either. Plenty of folks are calling this a sign of AI’s dubious “Van Gogh smear” over on ResetEra’s thread.
You might notice, however, that lots of comments in that self-same thread have been quite positive. But some of those folks will then notice the dubious parts and have a tough time reconciling it. If you’re having a great time with the upgrade, then by all means, have at it; the 60 FPS does wonders for the gameplay. There are, however, some rough edges.
Take this with a little grain of salt, since it’s possible that the above Redditor is making this up. But it’d be an odd thing to make up, I reckon, so I’m inclined to believe it. A request for a refund was, supposedly, rather quickly granted. This could indeed be happening for more players than just the one. Sites like Nintendo Everything have caught wind of the news as well—what I’m getting at here is that, regardless, Monolith Soft is going to be made well aware that not all is well in Xeno world today.
The best-case scenario is that Monolith works on a patch for their, er, upgrade patch. It’d also be rad if they learn from this experience for any potential remasters of Xenoblade Chronicles’ numbered titles. Last April, I wrote that all I wanted for Christmas was Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Definitive Edition. I didn’t get it, but I still feel that way. I just really, really, need the devs to not smear it while they’re at it, because goodness, the game’s smeared enough as-is.
