Which Starting Class Should You Choose In Octopath Traveler 0

When you complete the prologue in Octopath Traveler 0, you’ll have the opportunity to finally choose your starting class throughout the game. You won’t be locked to this decision, however, as you can unlock classes as you earn JP while playing the game and unlocking skills for your chosen class.

You will, however, be stuck with this class, its weapons, and abilities until you gain enough JP to unlock another one. With three different routes to choose from, you’ll want to choose the best class to get the most optimal start. These are the best classes to choose when you start Octopath Traveler 0.

Which Job Should You Choose First?

The protagonist chooses a job after the prologue in Octopath Traveler 0.

You’ll recruit several characters early on, and though your abilities won’t exactly match those of the recruitable characters, you probably want to avoid doubling up when you don’t have to.

Taking into account enemy and boss weaknesses for the first part of the game, combined with who you’ll end up recruiting in the beginning, there are a few classes that come out being better than others.

S Tier Starting Classes

These starting classes, though they have a few similarities to characters you’ll find at the beginning of the game, have enough differences and unique opportunities that they should be prioritized when choosing a starting class.

Explanation

S Tier

Thief

Though you’ll find another dagger user, there are a lot of enemies that are weak to sword damage to start. SP and HP Thief are invaluable, but Steal is unique to you and gets you early items you can steal from bosses.

Merchant

Arrow of Fortune gets you additional JP, a great place to start. You’ll have a unique weapon in the polearm, and Mystic Shot allows you to regain SP. Each of these skills is great at the beginning of the game, especially earning extra JP.

Scholar

Being able to read a foe’s weakness for free early on is great. Adding Analyze can uncover several weaknesses needed, then you’ll have access to other elemental damage options you won’t find in the first few chapters.

Cleric

Healing the entire row instead of a single person will come in handy, though you’ll recruit other healers early on. There aren’t many enemies weak to fan damage, though. Light damage is nice, and Wondrous Veil revives a downed ally. Celestial Veil recovering SP for allies is just as useful.

A Tier Starting Classes

These classes are decent enough situationally, but you’ll find quick replacements for them in the first few chapters. They’re still by no means bad choices, and they’re better than some others.

A Tier

Apothecary

You’ll have an axe user in Stia early on. You want Apothecary for Enshroud to blind enemies, Vivify for revival, and Heal All for regen health. Most of these options can be replaced by items, though.

Warrior

Though generic, there’s nothing wrong with going with Warrior. You’ll recruit another warrior with polearm and sword proficiency early on, but Assault deals polearm damage to all foes, and Counter Posture is great for countering physical attacks. Raising your attack and lowering the enemy’s defense can also come in clutch during boss fights.

If these classes weren’t easily replaceable, they’d be higher. The only reason they aren’t lower is due to the unique abilities the protagonist has when it comes to them. Regen is always good, and counterattack is neat enough until you find a Mastery to replace it, making the warrior class a lot less interesting to use after.

B Tier Starting Classes

The protagonist as a dancer in Octopath Traveler 0.

These classes should really only be used if you’re a fan of them and want to use them. You’ll have characters that fill the Hunter role, and early on, Dancer is just a bit too focused on support to be very helpful.

Explanation

B Tier

Dancer

The best thing you’ll get from this class early on is ice damage. Not very many enemies or bosses are weak to fan damage at all. You’ll be stuck not doing much early on as a dancer, relying on the rest of your party when you want to attack. The good thing is you’ll get Extra JP as a support skill.

Hunter

Axe and bow damage are very common weaknesses; however, you’ll have several characters that can use these weapons, including Phenn and Stia. Phenn has the wind damage covered as well. Two-Tiered Shot is nice, but Phenn also has something similar. You’d be better off choosing a more unique class.

You’ll recruit more than one hunter in the first few chapters of the game, so you won’t really need to choose the class for yourself. Dancer is fun, but it will be much more useful at later levels when you can really utilize all of the buffs you can provide the party.
