Which Mega Evolution Pokemon Should You Get First In Pokemon Legends: Z-A?

;The Mega Evolution function is back in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, with plenty of powerful Pokemon able to Mega Evolve now between the base game and the Mega Dimension DLC that adds dozens of new Megas to an already impressive (and seemingly still growing) roster.

But when you’re trying to decide which of your Pokemon would be best to have as a Mega Evolution early on in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, there are plenty of things you should consider: when and how you get their Mega Evolution stone, the type of Pokemon you’ll be fighting in the early hours, and much more.

You’d Absol-utely be wise to catch the very first Mega Pokemon you’re up against in Pokemon Legends: Z-A in the earliest hours of the game, when the mechanic is brought back from Pokemon X and Y for the Nintendo 3DS when we first ventured into Lumiose City all those years ago.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A – Starter Pokemon Guide

Not sure which starter to pick in Pokemon Legends: Z-A? We’ve got a handy breakdown for you here.

You’ll fight Mega Absol using a borrowed Mega Lucario, but if you catch the Absol in question and keep that Absolite you get for your efforts in stopping its rampage, you’ve got a free, higher-level Mega Pokemon available to you right away when the mechanic first enters your gameplay after the early tutorial missions.

After you’ve learned to use the Mega Evolution function in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, you’ll receive the Mega Stone that grants you access to the Mega form for the starter Pokemon you chose when you started the game, either Meganium, Feraligatr, or Emboar.

You’ve likely been building a team around this type advantage spread already, long before the Mega Evolution stones come along and shake up the core of the gameplay, so you may want to double down on powering up your very first friend on your adventure in Lumiose City. New stones will be available soon, but it’s always good to call on the powers you’ve already got.

Gyarados

Any longtime Pokemon fan can tell you that Magikarp is well worth catching, since if you’re able to grind that wimpy little fish up to level 20, you’ll be rewarded with a powerful new friend in Gyarados.

Getting your Gyarados used to be a sign of dedication in the earlier titles, too, since before EXP Share made grinding passive Pokemon easier, you’d have to toss Magikarp out and use your first turn to switch to your real choice for the fight.

Magikarp is available early on in the game, so you’ll likely have your Gyarados long before you’re able to purchase Gyaradosite from Quasartico, but that just means it’ll have even mightier base stats by the time it’s able to go Mega and become even stronger.

Beedrill

Original fans of the Pokemon games may laugh when we tell you that Bug-types kind of got a makeover in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, but these insects are inspiring out on the battlefield, dishing out damage with the best of them (as long as they’re not up against a strong Fire-type, that is – that type weakness is relatively universal).

You’ve likely noticed the cacophony of Kakuna hanging out on the trees around the plazas in Lumiose City, and if you’ve gotten one raised up to the final stage, Beedrill, your purchase of Beedrillite early on will make this fearsome Bee Pokemon even more powerful – your foes might not even see it coming!

Victreebel

Sure, you’ll need to do a little work on getting a Leaf Stone (they don’t come cheap from the Stone Emporium, after all!), but as soon as you’re able to, all those Bellsprouts and Weepinbells you’ve been seeing in the gardens and rooftops around Lumiose City will be as Mega as can be, with Mega Victreebel debuting in Pokemon Legends: Z-A.

The Best Pokemon Of Every Type In Pokemon Legends: Z-A

It’s not just the strongest Electric-type Pokemon that’ll shock you, either.

It looks a little silly – fans have been saying so since long before the game actually came out – but its slew of Grass and Poison moves can be indispensible to anyone who didn’t opt for Chicorita back when we were given the choice in the earliest hours of the game. Still, better late than never for this great Grass pick!

Heracross

Mega Stone Location

Quasartico Inc. (After It Opens)

Cost

240 Mega Shards

Going back to what we’ve already said about Bug types being surprisingly mighty in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Heracross is maybe the first time you get to see this boost in action, since one is available early on for players who trade Tracie for her Heracross called Bois when you first arrive in Lumiose.

It can’t evolve into any other Bug Pokemon, but with Heracrossite available at Quasartico and an already surprisingly impressive spread of base stats, your opponents might not expect the Bug bite that knocks them out and hands you the victory. Seriously, don’t sleep on Pin Missle in the early stages of this game!

Chandelure

Mega Stone Location

Quasartico Inc. (After Reaching Rank D)

Cost

360 Mega Shards

It’s not often than Gengar gets beaten out in terms of the Ghost Pokemon with the sheerest might in Pokemon games, being such a beloved first generation favorite, but Chandelure has slightly higher stas in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and it’s also available earlier on for those unable to trade with other players to evolve the fan-favorite Ghost of yesteryear.

After you’ve grabbed a Litwick from the Sewers as part of the game’s main mission, you’ll be able to evolve it into Lampent and then grab a free early Dusk Stone over the Racine Construction to evolve it into Chandelure. Capitalize on the Chandelurite you’ll get and your Ghost/Fire moves will have expanded quite powerfully.

Abomasnow

Mega Abomasnow Pokedex information in Pokemon Legends Z-A.

Mega Stone Location

Stone Emporium (After Unlocking Mega Evolution)

Cost

50,000 Pokedollars

Whether you raised your very own Snover into an Abomasnow of your very own stat perfecting mission or simply opted to capture the Alpha Pokemon in Wild Zone 12 to get your Abomasnow, the Abomasite you can purchase will compound the power of the Ice type from whom nobody but the experts are expecting strong Grass-type moves as well.

Especially if you’ve left your Grass-type coverage a little lacking as you reach toward the mid-game in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Abomasnow makes for one powerful Mega who’s able to learn a variety of moves via TMs or leveling up alike.

Just watch out for walking around Lumiose City with it – its sheer size can make the Battle Zones a little tough for sneaking up on foes!

Alakazam

Mega Alakazam Pokedex information in Pokemon Legends Z-A.

Mega Stone Location

Quasartico Inc. (After It Unlocks)

Cost

360 Mega Shards

Though plenty of powerful Psychic Pokemon have been introduced into the games since the series debuted back in the 1990s, sometimes, the old gen one favorites can’t be beat, and Alakazam is one of them. This longtime reigning fan-favorite Psychic-type has long been a force to be reckoned with, but that only gets more true once it Mega Evolves.

Though its Mega form isn’t new – it was introduced back in Pokemon X and Y with the Mega Evolution mechanic itself – it’s definitely one fans are excited to see returning. It can learn both Attack and Special Attack moves with ease, so no matter how you build your Alakazam, its Mega form is sure to excite.

You should probably still catch ‘em all, of course, but if you have to focus on any of them…
