Uniqlo’s Design-Your-Own Pokemon Merch Has Started Popping Up Outside Of Japan

Uniqlo added Pokemon, specifically Ditto in various forms, to its UTme range last year. UTme lets you effectively design your own t-shirts and tote bags, choosing from a range of designs and putting them wherever you like. The only drawback about the Pokemon additions to UTme was that they were only available in Japan, but that seems to have changed.

Pokemon fans the world over have begun sharing evidence that Ditto’s UTme options have started to appear at Uniqlo locations outside of Japan. Twitter account PKMN Style shared what are apparently images of a Pokemon tab, along with some of the Ditto design options, on a touchscreen at a Uniqlo store in the US.

Whoever runs that account is presumably UK-based, as they later followed up with their own images, confirming that the design-your-own Ditto merch options have also found their way to the UK. More tangible evidence that the designs are indeed available outside of Japan for the first time as, along with the instructions being in English in the alleged US images, the UK ones also include how much the customized items cost in local currency.

The options only appear to be available in-store for now and haven’t been added to other Uniqlo sites like they have been in Japan.

Those images have prompted other Pokemon fans to check their local Uniqlo stores to see just how widespread the Ditto merch is, and it seems to be just about everywhere, or at least it will be. Someone in Canada claims it’s available there, and a Belgian fan noted that they’ve had the options there for a couple of weeks, sharing a picture of a Ditto masquerading as a Pikachu that they put on some UTme merch they designed themselves.

As for why this is all potentially and not confirmed, despite the evidence shared from at least four different countries, TheGamer reached out to Uniqlo customer support, and they seemed confused by evidence showing the Ditto designs are now available everywhere. While they noted Pokemon graphic t-shirts are expected early this year, they claim the Ditto UTme range was not.

This is likely just a situation where wires have been crossed, or the UTme designs have been quietly added to Uniqlo locations without a big fuss, which seems like a strange decision to me given how popular they will almost certainly be. They join a Monster Hunter UTme range which was incredibly popular, but was seemingly never available outside of Japan.

The graphic t-shirts the Uniqlo customer service assistant referenced might be the ones revealed right before Christmas in preparation for Pokemon’s 30th anniversary. Not merch you design yourself, but items that include imagery from the original Pokemon games, including Pikachu’s first, much chonkier design.
