Last week, Aspyr dropped a surprise update for Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered, implementing a Challenge Mode, 15 new trophies, and 10 new outfits, and while that might sound good on the surface, the recent Steam reviews paint a different picture. At the time of writing, the trilogy holds a ‘Mostly Negative’ score, with players noting the string of new technical issues, while also criticizing the low-res and low quality “AI garbage” cosmetics.
However, in a new statement, Aspyr claimed that — while the new outfits might not look great — they were hand-crafted by human artists.
“We hear and appreciate your feedback regarding the recent Challenge Mode update for Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered,” Aspyr said. “Our top priority is the delivery of a patch that will fix the texture issues and technical bugs. In addition, a series of updates are on the way to address a variety of technical issues across all platforms. This is also an opportunity to correct some mistaken information: the outfits in the update were created by our team of artists; no AI-generated assets were used in the update. We’ll release more details on the patch content and timing as soon as possible.”
Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered Players Are Calling On Aspyr To Rollback The Update
Take one look at the comments, and it’s clear nobody buys what Aspyr is selling. Skins aside, which very well may have been designed by a team of artists, there’s the update’s key art, which appears to have been made with AI – butchering Lara Croft’s face. There’s also the odd UI elements in the mobile port, and the upscaled textures in the base game that were riddled with mistakes. As one fan put it, “Extremely not convinced.”
Fans are now left waiting for hotfixes to address the litany of new issues that the Challenge Mode update introduced, but many are calling on Aspyr to roll back the update altogether, or at the very least, implement a choice to opt-out. In the meantime, negative reviews continue to pour in, as players have taken to calling the remastered trilogy “Slop Raider.”
