Menace is tough. It makes no mistake in making that clear to you from the very beginning. Strong squad composition is a must, and knowing who you’re up against is the only surefire way to victory.
That’s why it’s a help to know what you’re doing. The game is light on tutorials, and expects you to be proactive in managing your quad and mission selections. So here are some tips to make all that a bit more manageable.
With the game in early access as of this writing, it’s very possible the details mentioned here may change
Hire More Squad Leaders
At the beginning of the game, you are given a selection of squad leaders to choose from, with you being able to choose four. However, you can get many, many more. And you absolutely should as soon as you can.
On top of being able to deploy more than four squad leaders at once, they’ll eventually get fatigued from consecutive missions. You’ll want more squad leaders at the ready to swap out when that time comes.

You won’t be able to put down these turn-based strategy games.
Always Use As Much Supply As Possible
Every mission has a supplies limit for how much you can bring with you. Every piece of equipment you bring with you takes up supplies, and the more promotions a squad leader has, the more supplies they’ll take to bring by default. The Squaddies you bring with each Squad Leader also acts as a multiplier on a mission’s supplies limit.
However, supplies are tied to the mission, not a resource you have. And so you should always be maximising the amount of supplies you’re using. There’s no downside to this, and it will give you more firepower and options within any mission. Always bring the best that you can.
Don’t Forget To Upgrade Your Ship
The TCRN Impetus is the ship that shepherds you across the cosmos on your various operations, and it’s your own base of operations. And that’s why it is essential to not forget it exists, and upgrade as soon and as often as you can.
New components are unlocked through building trust with factions, and then using OCI to install those components. These are essential upgrades, too. Things like repairing vehicles between missions, unlocking once-off attacks, offering more intelligence to discover what enemies you’re up against, and so on.
Update Your Equipment
Each squad has a variety of equipment it needs. These include primary and special weapons, accessories, armour, vehicles in some cases, and so on. These almost exclusively determine what’s available to your squad, so it’s important to keep a close eye on it.
However, don’t ever grow complacent. Some missions will reward you with new equipment, especially when you battle against human enemies. The black market always has a rolling selection of items on offer, too. Never pass up a chance to improve your gear as they can often be dramatically better than what you started with.
Keep An Eye On Your Squaddies
While every squad has a leader, the rest of the group has to be made up of someone. That’s where Squaddies come into play. These are all the other troops in a squad, all of them granting you extra damage and hit points, at the cost of a higher supply cost the more squaddies you have.
However, Squaddies are finite. They will regenerate slowly over time, and you can put out a call through the black market for more, but this can be ludicrously expensive. Make sure to never put your squads in careless danger during missions, as even though the health is restored between missions, there’s every chance you’re not getting those squaddies back.
Investing in a Med Bay in the Impetus is a good choice, as it has a chance of rescuing any squaddies that are downed during a mission.
Build Up Intelligence
Before beginning a mission in Menace, you are able to survey the map, the approximate location of enemies, your objectives, and the terrain while placing your units. This info can still be helpful, but doesn’t exactly help when it comes to team composition. That’s the role of intelligence.
Intelligence is basically the information you have on the parameters of a mission. While some operations have their own methods of acquiring intelligence, upgrading the Impetus with sensors is your primary way of having a constant level of intelligence on your enemies. It may not seem worth it at first, but once you have enough gear to plan your squads more, it becomes an essential tool.
