The Witcher’s Next Three Games Will All Release Within A Six Year Window

The Witcher’s Next Three Games Will All Release Within A Six Year Window

Despite more than a decade having passed since The Witcher 3, CD Projekt Red has reiterated that it plans to release an entire Witcher trilogy within six years, starting with The Witcher 4.

CDPR released its Q3 financial results last week, and in the questions that followed, studio CEO Michal Nowakowski confirmed that releasing three Witcher games in six years is still the plan. That’s a whole new trilogy, led by Ciri, and does not include the remake of the first Witcher game that’s currently in development.

We’re Getting Three Brand New Witcher Games In Six Years If All Goes To Plan

“As we had stated before, our plan still is to launch the whole trilogy within a six-year period,” Nowakowski said. “That would mean we would plan to have a shorter development time between The Witcher 4 and The Witcher 5, between The Witcher 5 and The Witcher 6, and so on.”

That would be quite the commitment, and a remarkable feat if it’s a promise CDPR can keep. The original Witcher trilogy was released over an eight-year period, which is pretty impressive in itself. Triple-A development times have increased exponentially in the decade since The Witcher 3 launched, so to be so sure that you can deliver three more games with an even tighter turnaround is very impressive. If those targets can be hit, of course.

The 12 Year Wait For The Witcher 4 Means It’s Not Really The Witcher 4 Anymore

The Witcher 3 transformed what it meant to be an RPG, but The Witcher 4 will have a tough time living up to it.

There’s a ton of anticipation for a new Witcher game, too. Although GTA 6 took home the award for Most Wanted game at the Golden Joysticks, it was a closer run thing than you might think. Rockstar’s delayed juggernaut beat The Witcher 4 by less than two percent.

We probably won’t be playing a new Witcher game before we get more Grand Theft Auto, though. There has been a lot of chatter and conjecture surrounding which big games will launch in 2026. As it stands, GTA 6 will be one of them. However, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will not, and neither will The Witcher 4.

No, CDPR also confirmed that Ciri’s trilogy will not begin in 2026. That means a 2027 launch, at the earliest – and if all goes to plan – points to a Witcher trilogy that will be completed by 2033. It’s full steam ahead on The Witcher 4 at CDPR right now, although the studio does have a little more than half an eye on the next Cyberpunk 2077, too.

It’s been three years since CDPR confirmed Cyberpunk will be getting a sequel, but that follow-up is at least three years away. The bulk of its workforce is focused on The Witcher 4 right now. However, its latest report reveals it plans to have as many as 400 people working on Cyberpunk 2 by the end of 2027. That’s why many are expecting the next Witcher game to release in 2027, as CDPR’s plans imply that most of the Witcher 4 team will be shifting their attention to Cyberpunk 2 during that year.
