While you’re progressing through your journey across Kanto in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen, you’ll encounter dozens of Pokemon, with several powerful Grass types among them. Grass-type Pokemon are excellent against a few of the earlier gym leaders like Misty and Brock, which gives you an advantage if you pick up one of these Pokemon early.
While choosing a Grass-type as your starter might be the best way to secure a powerful option ASAP, there are a handful of alternatives to add to your team, even if you choose Squirtle or Charmander as your starter Pokemon.

Parasect is one of the earliest examples of a Grass-type Pokemon that you’ll find during your journey, though there will be other, superior options to choose from the further you get into the game. However, if you need a Pokemon that can inflict Poison, Sleep, and Paralyze, then Parasect is one of the best options out there.
Unfortunately, quadruple weaknesses against Flying and Fire-type attacks make Parasect extremely vulnerable to one-hit KO’s (OHKOs) against those Pokemon.

Tangela stands out thanks to its excellent defensive resilience and its solid Special Attack value, which allows it to capitalize on access to moves like Mega Drain, which both damages foes and restores Tangela’s HP.
Tangela is a great short-term option to fulfill your Grass-type niche, but you must be careful which Pokemon you deploy Tangela against, as this Pokemon’s weak Special Defense rating makes it incredibly vulnerable to many strong Fire-type Pokemon that you’ll encounter.

Sunflora won’t become available until you defeat the Elite Four and obtain the National Dex, but once you do and head to the Sevii Islands, you can find this impressive Grass-type Special Attacker in the tall grass as Sunkern.
While most of Sunflora’s stats are middling at best, this Pokemon’s solid Special Attack and Special Defense make it a decent option if you’d like to add it to your team. Adding this Pokemon to your team this late won’t be ideal, but it gives you another option for taking on the Elite Four again.

Bellossom is one of the best available Grass-type Pokemon, which you can attain once you acquire a Sun Stone to give to your Gloom, which will evolve it into Bellossom instead of the usual Vileplume route that comes with a Leaf Stone. Bellossom’s solid Base Stat Total (BST) makes it a dangerous Special Attacker without having any major stat weaknesses, save for its low Speed.
While selecting this Pokemon over Vileplume is usually done to fill Pokedex slots rather than choose the superior Pokemon, Bellossom is still one of the best Grass-type Pokemon you can get in FRLG and is worth using if you prefer this Pokemon’s aesthetics.

Vileplume’s slightly superior offensive stats make this Pokemon the superior choice over Bellossom, which boasts slightly higher defense stats at the cost of its Special Attack.
Vileplume will only be available if you’re playing FireRed, as Bellsprout appears instead of Oddish in LeafGreen.
Despite the exclusivity of this Pokemon, it stands out as one of the must-have Grass-types in FRLG, though, luckily, if you’re playing LG instead, you still have an incredibly strong option for the Grass-type Pokemon slot on your team.

Victreebel is the LeafGreen equivalent to Vileplume, and while this Pokemon’s appearance is far less pleasing, its BST make it one of the most potent Grass-type options you can find in FRLG. While Vileplume was noticeably more inclined for Special Attacking, Victreebel can choose between Special and Physical attacks with nearly identical totals in each stat.
Victreebel’s impressive status as a status-inflicter and all-out attacker makes it one of the most versatile Grass-type Pokemon available, and is a fantastic replacement if you didn’t choose Bulbasaur, as each Pokemon features somewhat similar BSTs, though Venusaur boasts a slight edge.

Exeggutor stands out among its peers as the sole Psychic and Grass evolutionary line in FRLG, giving you access to two potent pools of attacking moves.
Given the lack of powerful Psychic Pokemon you can find, Exeggutor stands out as one of the best two-for-one Pokemon, given its access to powerful moves for both of its types. If you can find one with a Modest nature, even better.
If you didn’t select Venusaur, then catch an Exeggcute as soon as you can and work on evolving it ASAP so you can gain access to one of the most deadly Special Attacking Pokemon in the game. Teach Exeggutor moves like Giga Drain and Psychic to capitalize on its amazing Special Attack stat.

Venusaur stands out as the most well-rounded Grass-type Pokemon in FRLG, thanks to its incredibly even stat spread, decent Speed, and access to some of the best Grass and Poison-type moves. Venusaur’s ideal moveset typically includes moves like Sludge Bomb, Giga Drain, Frenzy Plant, and your choice of Leech Seed or one of the status-inflicting powders.
While you can’t access this Pokemon’s Mega Evolution in FRLG, Venusaur still stands tall as the clear best Grass-type choice due to its impressive combination of stats, moves, and early availability to get the most out of it during the entirety of your playthrough.
