The Strongest Fire Types In Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen

The Strongest Fire Types In Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen

While you’re busy defeating gym leaders across Kanto in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen, you’ll come across dozens of Pokemon to battle and catch during your adventure. Among these options will be some of the strongest Fire-type Pokemon in the game, and depending on whether you’re playing FireRed or LeafGreen, you’ll have a different set of options to choose from.

If you didn’t select Charizard as your starter, then you’ll need to wait for a bit before you’re able to find a suitable addition to fill your Fire-type niche. Still, there are a handful of superb options, especially among the available Legendary Pokemon.

Rapidash might not be the first Pokemon to pop into your mind when you’re thinking of powerful Fire-type Pokemon, but this Pokemon’s solid Base Stat Total (BST) makes it one of the standout choices of FireRed & LeafGreen’s available options. The 100 Attack stat Rapidash boasts makes its physical moves more potent, though the variety of Special moves is much greater.

Unfortunately, Rapidash can’t take advantage of any physical Fire-type moves in this generation, so you can’t utilize this Pokemon to its full potential despite a solid BST. Given this Pokemon’s abysmal moveset, it’s far from the best Fire-type you’ll find, but it will do the job in the short term.

Ninetales suffers from the opposite problem as Rapidash, as it has access to plenty of excellent Special Fire-type moves to make the most of its superior Special Attack, but unfortunately, that stat isn’t very high, so it lacks a bit of the punch you’d hope for.

You can only find Vulpix in the wild in LeafGreen, while FireRed has Growlithe instead.

However, while Rapidash and Ninetales share comparable issues, Ninetales jumps out ahead of its peer thanks to a small edge in Special Attack and superior defenses to give this Pokemon the edge over Rapidash.

Despite a massive weakness in its physical Defense stat, Houndoom boasts another very similar BST to both Rapidash and Ninetales, but with some essential differences, most notably the superior 110 Special Attack, which makes Houndoom a much more dangerous attacker than both Ninetales and Rapidash.

While you definitely need to stay aware of the opponents that Houndoom will be facing, this dual-type offers both superb Fire-type attacks and Dark-type moves like Crunch to choose from. The lack of Dark-type Pokemon and moves makes Houndoom a standout option to add to your team.

Arcanine stands out as one of the most recognizable Fire-type Pokemon from FRLG, as this FireRed exclusive Pokemon is arguably one of the best in the entire generation. Since this Pokemon’s Attack and Special Attack are comparable, you can choose to lean into either, with an Adamant (Attack) or Modest (Special Attack) nature to boost your chosen stat.

The smartest choice is to lean heavily into Arcanine’s Special Attack, since it has access to moves like Flamethrower and Fire Blast to use. However, Arcanine’s high Attack stat should be enough to support the use of physical moves, like ExtremeSpeed, to capitalize on the mixed attacking capability.

Despite its incredibly impressive BST, Entei suffers from the same awkward situation that many of the other best Fire-type Pokemon struggle with: a lack of physical Fire moves. Since there aren’t any options for Entei to choose from, its 90 Special Attack stat is the one you’ll be focusing on, with access to standards like Flamethrower and Fire Blast.

Thankfully, Entei is one of the tankiest Fire types in the game, making it a superb choice to lead your team and endure hits while fighting back with impressive efficiency despite the awkward BST.

Charizard stands out as one of the best Fire types in FRLG, especially due to its access to both Fire and Flying-type moves. Since most of the best Fire-type moves in FRLG are Special Attacks, Charizard’s 109 stat is an excellent starting point to begin selecting the best moves to capitalize on.

While most of Charizard’s Flying-type moves are physical, it can still make use of these options against Fighting-type Pokemon, giving Charizard plenty of versatility as a dual-type attacker and a great lead-off choice.

Moltres boasts the best BST for a Fire-type Pokemon in FRLG, as this Pokemon’s focus on Special Attack and its superbly well-rounded stats make it stand out as a superior version of Charizard, since the two share similar BST breakdowns and the same dual-typing. Once you get to Mt. Ember and catch this Pokemon, your Fire-type slot will be spoken for.

Moltres makes quick work of most Fire-weak foes, thanks to its deadly combination of a high Special Attack and the best Fire-type moves in the generation. While it can feel a bit cheap to rely on a Legendary Pokemon on your team, there’s no denying that Moltres is the best Fire-type you can find in FRLG.
