Maxis has announced that it will be rolling out a paid mod system for The Sims 4 on March 17, alongside a new currency called ‘Moola’ and an in-game marketplace to spend it on.
As reported by VG247, The Sims Maker Program will allow approved creators to upload content onto the marketplace, where verified mods can be purchased directly. This new program will be made available to PC and Mac players first, with PlayStation and Xbox to follow suit over the next couple of months.
Moola can be purchased in the following amounts:
- $2.49 USD for 200 Moola
- $4.99 USD for 500 Moola
- $9.99 USD for 1,000 Moola
- $24.99 USD for 2,600 Moola
- $49.99 USD for 5,500 Moola
Expansion Packs, Game Packs, Stuff Packs, and Kits will also be moved to the marketplace, but you do not need Moola to purchase them, and they can still be acquired through existing storefronts.
“At the heart of the new in-game Marketplace are the Makers,” the official blog post reads. “Makers are community specialists who design custom content to help you express yourself in new ways. They bring new perspectives and ideas inspired by how they love to play.”
Maxis Is Taking A 70 Percent Cut On All Mods Due To “Overhead Costs”
Makers have “creative ownership” over their work and can decide how it is priced and packaged — these will be labeled as “Maker Packs,” and encompass both Create a Sim and Build/Buy items. However, Makers will only keep 30 percent of the earnings, i.e. if someone spends 100 Moola, the mod creator would make 30 cents USD.
“The Sims is covering all costs and fees associated with publishing, including overhead costs such as platform fees, VAT taxes, server costs, and other transactional expenses, which may vary by platform,” Maxis explains. “In addition to covering the publishing fees, The Sims reinvests in the Maker community, supporting Makers, improving tools and resources available to them, funding human-led quality verification, as well as ensuring every Maker Pack is translated into all 18 supported languages.”
For those looking to become an approved Maker, you can submit an application starting tomorrow.
