Naughty Dog may have given up on The Last of Us Part 2’s Factions mode a long time ago, but fans are working to make a multiplayer mode possible.
As we’re all painfully aware of by now, it’s been a long time since Naughty Dog released a proper new game. Sure, we’ve had a remake of The Last of Us and a definitive edition of its sequel, but we’re now approaching six years since the studio’s last release. While Intergalactic will hopefully make up for the wait, that almost wasn’t the case.
For quite a long time, Naughty Dog was working on a dedicated multiplayer mode for The Last of Us Part 2, which eventually evolved into its own thing altogether. That project was sadly cancelled just over two years ago, leaving us all wondering what a current-gen Last of Us multiplayer game might look like.
The Last Of Us Part 2 Fans Are Working On A Multiplayer Mode That Is The Closest Thing To Factions We’ll Get
If The Mod Is Ever Completed, It’ll Be PVP Focused
Over on Twitter, Speclizer_ (a renowned modder in The Last of Us community) shared a clip from a multiplayer mod that they’ve been working on for The Last of Us Part 2 on PC. The clip shows two players running around the game’s massive Seattle, Day 1 map, and, weirdly, floating in the air for a little while.

HBO’s The Last Of Us Is Now Just Another Failed Video Game Adaptation
I enjoyed the second season of HBO’s The Last of Us, but I can see where this is headed.
To be fair, Speclizer_ does outright say that it’s “very broken” and “not a lot has been implemented yet”, so the floating Ellie’s shouldn’t raise too many eyebrows.
The short clip is just a test for a mod that’s nowhere near finished, but the fact that it’s up and running even in this state is an interesting sign of things to come. It seems that Speclizer_ does actually have some ideas for the mode’s future, as they noted in a reply that if it gets finished, it’ll be PvP-focused since adding other NPCs messes with the code.
Since the mod is clearly in a very early state, it’s not clear whether Speclizer_ will get to that point, but with the official Factions being abandoned for some time, it’s basically the closest we’ll ever get to it. Here’s hoping that the mod does eventually make it into a fully playable state.
