PowerWash Simulator 2 is a sequel to the unexpected indie hit which takes the original game and makes some changes. The main gameplay remains the same. You’ll still get to wash away grime from a variety of locations and vehicles with a satisfying pssssssssh sound, and you can unlock some secrets and locate some gnomes.
However, not everything is the same. This follow-up adds a few new features and makes some tweaks to existing ones. We take a look at what has changed between PowerWash Simulator, and its soapier sequel.
But Not Always For The Better
Menus, menus everywhere, but where the heck do I find my new powerwasher? That was my first thought as I flipped between menus letting me customise my clothing, van, and powerwasher, and purchase furniture or new equipment, trying to find out how to equip my new cleaner.
Bring up the radial menu by holding down the button you use to swap between the three washer types. This allows you to select which washer of that type to use.
However, the rest of the menus are thankfully more self-explanatory. There are far too many of them, but at least they have nice big icons to help you work out what they actually do.
The Dirt Highlight Is Customisable
This One Is A Highlight
No more blinding orange flashing in your face for half a second, leaving you confused and slightly queasy. The dirt highlight can now be customised in both duration and colour.
Choose from green, orange, red, blue, yellow, pink or white to ensure that the highlight is more visible on a wide range of different coloured backgrounds. Being able to up the time it stays coloured from one second to up to five also helps you more easily find those last specks of dirt.
Cleaning Solutions Have Gone
Soap Made Simple
There are no more cleaning solutions! Gone is the need to enter the store to buy a range of soapy options to clean your locations, and swap between them to make sure the solution matches the material of the surface.
Now soap is just generic, and you can easily cover items in glorious suds, which wash away stubborn stains with a satisfying swish. If you run out, just wait a minute or two and the soap nozzle will be refilled.
Scissor Lifts And Aerial Swings
Climb To New Heights
As well as ladders and scaffolding, you can now use scissor lifts and an aerial swing to reach new areas and clean in new ways. The aerial swing especially swings side to side and up and down, offering a way to more easily cover larger areas without needing to go up and down ladders, moving them as you go.
The scissor lift is similar, offering a large amoutn of height variety at the push of a button. You can also get a little more width thanks to the platform that allows you to walk a few paces.
The Gnomes Have Friends
Now There Are Also Cats
As well as gnomes in weird places, you can now also find cats to pet in every location around the world. They aren’t always there as a group, but you’ll always have at least one cat to pet while you clean.
The adorable trio will also reside in your home base, always ready to be petted whenever the need takes you. Just head up the stairs and Ulysses, Bubble, and Squeak will be waiting.
You Can Customise More Items
Flames On Your Van, Check
Customising your washer skin and outfit has returned, but is now joined by being able to also customise your van. The best part of this is that you can add funky retro flames down the side of the van, just because.
There are a good number of swatches available, including plain colours and gradients. These will also hopefully expand further in future, allowing you to fully match your equipment, van and outfit.
There Are More Powerwashers To Play With
Including A Funky Floor Cleaner
There are now three distinct types of powerwasher. The Urban X focuses on power over area, while the Prime Vista focuses on area over power. There’s also the Swirl Force, which covers large flat areas with ease.
The Urban X and Prime Vista also have four different levels of powerwashers for purchase, allowing you to increase the power and range of your washers as you earn enough to upgrade to professional level.
The Levels Have Far More Quirks
Moving Floors And Hidden Doors Galore
Many of the levels have quirks to explore. There are many moving parts, rotating floors, sliding doors, and other variables to the surfaces. Add in some weird angles, tiny gaps, and multiple levels and there’s a lot to clean.
Some areas require you to manipulate doors, hit targets and similar mechanics in order to locate all the items which need to be cleaned. The added puzzle element is a neat extra touch. You’ll also find far more unique locations in comparison to the flurry of houses and common vehicles in the first game.
Jobs Have Multiple Parts
And Some Neat Secrets
Some jobs unlock secrets as you clean. One of the earliest is a public bathroom which starts as a path on the ground before a sign rises up, followed by the bathroom, which is also filthy and needs the inside cleaning as well.
Later levels have more quirky second parts, including secret trap doors and similar funky ways to move into a multiple-part job. These are slightly spoiled by the progress bar, but still enjoyable to complete.
You Have A Home Base
And Can Even Change The Furniture
Finally, a place to call home. Your home base includes an office with added cats, an obligatory gnome, and an area to clean furniture. You’ll also find a diorama shelf to easily enter free play, a map to track your story progress, and a pinboard to solve the mystery.
All this, plus some sets of furniture which you can clean and place to customise the main area in your base. It’s both fun and practical, adding a new element to things and allowing you to feel more like a successful business owner. We just need a coffee machine.
