Pokemon Legends: Z-A might be one of the best games to try your hand at a Nuzlocke challenge, thanks to the excellent combination of diverse spawn areas and plenty of experience available to level up your evolving team composition. While there’s no single best team to use for a Nuzlocke, there are a few options that stand out thanks to their combination of dangerous sweepers and durable tanks.
Of course, it’s a smart idea to use as many of the strongest Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A as you can, but given that Nuzlocke challenge rules typically only allow you to catch one Pokemon from each area, you’ll need to get a little creative.
Attack & Defense Hybrid Without Starters
|
Aegislash |
Ampharos |
|
Beedrill |
Pangoro |
|
Starmie |
Victreebel |
If you want to enjoy a Nuzlocke challenge run while using an unusual party that focuses on options outside your typical starters, then this hybrid team is for you.
Ampharos is a solid Pokemon you can pick up from the start, as there are plenty of Mareep in the first Wild Zone, plus a shiny variant from a side quest.
Beedrill is another top-tier Mega Evolution that you can find early in your adventure, and will form a strong core with Ampharos as you battle the Rogue Mega Pokemon throughout the game.
Pick up your Mareep in Wild Zone 1 and ignore Caterpie – you can get a Kakuna in Wild Zone 2 or Wild Zone 7 to evolve into your Beedrill, adhering to the Nuzlocke rules of one Pokemon per area.
You can evolve a Pangoro after finding a Pancham in Wild Zone 3, and this Pokemon should help provide excellent early coverage against a variety of opponents, including both Ghosts and Normal-type Pokemon.
Victreebel and Starmie are two more excellent Mega Evolutions you can add to your team, but unfortunately, they’re both found in Wild Zone 10.
Get Bellsprout first, then wait until Wild Zone 16 to catch Starmie, since Victreebel is a safer option that is more likely to stay alive with access to Giga Drain, as opposed to Starmie, which is very frail.
Honedge is the easy Wild Zone 4 choice, given the lack of other viable options, so you can get to work on evolving your Aegislash early on to provide defensive stability for this team while you assemble it.

Defense Wins Championships
|
Krookodile |
Mawile |
|
Medicham |
Sableye |
|
Slowbro |
Trevenant |
Speaking of defensive options, this Nuzlocke team composition is focused primarily on staying alive and neutralizing damage whenever possible.
Sableye offers three complete immunities to Normal, Fighting, and Psychic attacks. Mawile offers immunity to Poison and Dragon-type attacks, thus completely negating five damage types between the two Pokemon.
Slowbro might not have an immunity to a given type, but it resists several popular types in Fire, Fighting, Psychic, Water, Ice, and Steel.
Those three Pokemon form your wall of a defensive core, while Krookodile offers dangerous attacking flexibility without sacrificing defensive capabilities via its immunity to Psychic-type moves.
Trevenant and Medicham provide more flexibility as excellent switch-ins that can take a hit to get in, while striking back with powerful attacks of their own across multiple types.
Mawile can function as both an attacker and defensive switch-in thanks to its immunities, making it arguably the most important Pokemon in this team comp.
High-Powered With Starters
|
Charizard |
Feraligatr |
|
Heracross |
Malamar |
|
Mawile |
Venusaur |
While this might be one of the latest game teams you can make, it gives you the flexibility to put half of it together early on in your run, while cycling your other three slots with Pokemon that may potentially faint and thus be unusable for the rest of the run.
This team will take a while to assemble, since you’ll first need to select Charizard from Mable, then catch Bulbasaur in Wild Zone 20 to evolve into Venusaur. This also means you need to get Inkay before Wild Zone 20, since you can’t catch a Malamar there if you catch something else first, per Nuzlocke rules.
Victreebel is an excellent placeholder for Venusaur with top-tier survivability thanks to Giga Drain. It might even be worth sticking with if you enjoy using this Pokemon.
Heracross is easily one of the strongest Pokemon in the game and is one of the premier options for speedrunners to use in their attempts. Its superb Attack, varied moveset, and unusual typing make Heracross a must-have for safety purposes. You’ll need to trade with an NPC to get one, but the option is available early on in your run.
Charizard and Feraligatr are your ideal starter picks for this comp, as Feraligatr offers a powerful offense with decent bulk, while Charizard is capable of KO’ing most Pokemon weak to its attacks with one hit.
Mawile and Malamar each provide much-needed type coverage and also provide flexibility to switch in and tank a hit while you heal any of your Pokemon who need it. Mawile is the more attacking-minded of the two, and should mainly be used to tank if it is immune to damage, like against Dragon-type Pokemon.
Offense First With Tanky Attackers
|
Feraligatr |
Gardevoir |
|
Heracross |
Krookodile |
|
Metagross |
Pidgeot |
If the defensive Nuzlocke option was too reactive for you and you’d prefer to stay on the front foot with access to some of the most aggressive attackers in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, then this team will blow you away.
You won’t be straying away from starters, with Feraligatr standing out as the best option for this particular team comp. There’s no other Water-type that boasts this superb level of balance between Attack and Defense, with those two base stats both eclipsing 100.
You can still use this team if you choose a different starter, but you may need to make one or two other substitutions, like removing Pidgeot if you want to use Charizard in the team.
Heracross returns to be the physically attacking presence alongside Feraligatr that can easily decimate any opponent it faces, as evidenced by its speedrunning versatility.
Krookodile rounds out the physical trio, providing the last bit of type coverage needed to deal with any threat you can imagine.
Gardevoir is a nice option that won’t even take up a Wild Zone catch if you collected the Ralts and Gardevoirite Mystery Gift. Aside from being an easy addition to the squad, Gardevoir’s power as a Psychic and Fairy-type attacker is unmatched, with Draining Kiss providing the survivability to tank hits and fire back while absorbing HP.
Metagross is another powerful dual threat that can both attack and defend, with its Steel typing and access to a plethora of Psychic-type moves making it a nightmare for Poison-type Pokemon to deal with.
Pidgeot is primarily here for vibes and to serve as another excellent Mega Evolution option while providing some Flying-type moves that you’re otherwise lacking.
