We first met Kratos when he was already a killing machine with outstanding strength, but in God of War: Sons of Sparta, we find out that he was also pretty strong in his younger years. With the use of a spear and some special objects from the gods, Kratos can perform unique actions and be a deadly threat to the enemies on his way.
Many skills can be unlocked for the young, bold boy, and it can get tricky to know which ones are the best. So here’s our guide with the best skills you should unlock first in God of War: Sons of Sparta.
Best Skills To Unlock First
You’ll be unlocking many skills as you make your way throughout the story. Below are the skills we think you should focus on first.
|
Skill |
Type |
Blood Orbs Needed |
Effect |
Why It’s Cool |
|---|---|---|---|---|
|
Vanguard II |
Offensive |
500 |
Slightly increases the force applied with each impact. |
This skill, which can be even better with Vanguard III, gives you a mix of offensive and defensive advantages. As you deal damage, your opponent moves a bit further away, giving you breathing room to dodge an upcoming attack or land one more hit if able. It’s basically useless for bosses. |
|
Spark Stinger II |
Offensive |
500 |
Spark Stinger strikes the ground, creating a spray of sparks to increase range. |
Your offensive tools are pretty limited when you start the game, so expanding an ability like Spark Stinger and making it attack in a longer range is a great idea. |
|
Nightfall I |
Offensive |
1,000 |
Press L1 + Square while airborne to perform a falling spear slam attack. |
Great new attack that you can unlock. It will take Spartan Spirit each time you use it, but it’s a good finisher against enemies. |
|
Phalanx Splitter I |
Offensive |
1,000 |
Press and hold Square to charge, then release Square to perform a strong attack. |
Again, expanding your range of moves is a must in this game, and with Phalanx Splitter, you’ll also get a skill that deals significant damage against any enemy. |
|
Siege Tactic |
Defensive |
500 |
While dodging, hold the Left Stick forward and press Square to perform a bashing blow with the Spartan Dory. |
Within the Defensive skills, you’ll find a variety of extra dodges and counters that really improve how you fight with Kratos. Siege Tactic is a perfect counter for when you dodge from an enemy attack and end up far from them to perform a counter. |
|
Flank Maneuver |
Defensive |
500 |
While evading, hold the Left Stick backward and press Square to perform a double strike with the Spartan Dory. |
Similar to Siege Tactic, with the difference that you’re gaining a safe distance first by dodging backwards. |
|
Agile Evade II |
Defensive |
1,000 |
While holding R1, move your left stick to the left or right and press Circle to perform a rolling evade. |
With this skill, you gain a larger roll, which is excellent for avoiding attacks with long ranges or passing through enemies, no matter their size. If you only want to spend your Blood Orbs in one expensive skill, I’d select this one. |
|
Laconian Revenge |
Defensive |
500 |
After a successful parry against a melee strike, press Square to perform a shield counter with the Spartan Aspis. |
Performing a parry is hard, but it’s likely the best move you have in the whole game — at least in the first half of the game. The only thing missing for it is a proper counter after you parry an attack, and Laconian Revenge fills that role. So stop wasting your time, master your parries, and get this skill |
