The mystery RPG that Bandai Namco has been teasing for the past week is Echoes of Aincrad, a new Sword Art Online game that lets you create your own hero for the first time in the series.
Earlier this week, Bandai Namco took to Twitter to tease a mysterious new RPG with a brief gameplay clip and some shots of the environment. Everyone has spent the last few days trying to figure out which project or franchise is getting a new game, but some eagle-eyed fans pointed out that a pillar shown in the trailer made it look like the game could be related to Sword Art Online.
As revealed in the official livestream, that’s exactly the case, as the mystery game is Echoes of Aincrad, a new action RPG that basically seems like Sword Art Online’s own version of Dragon Ball Xenoverse, complete with a customisable original protagonist for the first time in series history.
Echoes Of Aincrad Revealed, And It’s Coming Sooner Than You Think
SAO Is Going Back To The Start With A New Take On The Series
Echoes of Aincrad is a current-gen exclusive action RPG that’s aiming to take Sword Art Online in a new direction, namely one that lets you create and customise your own protagonist. As the name implies, Echoes of Aincrad takes place in the first arc of Sword Art Online, and will let players leave their own mark on the story.
Both of those elements make me think that Echoes of Aincrad is basically aiming to be the Dragon Ball Xenoverse of the Sword Art Online world.
In a hands-off preview, I got to see 15 minutes of Echoes of Aincrad in action, and it looks like it’s shaping up quite nicely with flashy but focused combat, partner characters that help you out in battle, and a massive world that’s teeming with secrets. As a Sword Art Online noob, what I saw was enough to pique my interest.
It won’t be long until we can all check it out, as Echoes of Aincrad is launching in just a few months on July 10.
