Last week’s Nintendo Direct was a little underwhelming, but there were some surprises in there. The Super Bomberman Collection was one of them, not only revealed, but also shadow-dropped later that same day. The collection of classic games has lived up to the hype, too, as it’s currently the highest-rated game of 2026.
Super Bomberman Collection Is Currently 2026’s Game Of The Year, I Don’t Make The Rules
Even though the Super Bomberman Collection has been available for a week, it has taken a while for reviews to start dropping since those writing them got to play it at the same time as everyone else. So far, those reviews have been glowing. The collection has a score of 90 on OpenCritic, knocking the 89-rated Mewgenics down to second place.
The Super Bomberman Collection only has seven reviews so far, which means its score could drop by quite a few points, even if it were to get just a couple of slightly lower scores. That seems unlikely based on the scores it has so far, though. Nothing lower than an 8.2/10 for the collection, and more than half of its reviewers awarding Bomberman a 9/10, hence the collection settling on a 90.

Is The Super Bomberman Collection Really A New Game?
Similar to some of the games that reviewed highly in 2025, there’s an argument to be made that the Super Bomberman Collection shouldn’t really count when it comes to determining which of this year’s new releases have the best review scores. That logic was applied to Tears of the Kingdom’s Switch 2 Edition since it wasn’t technically a new game, as the original launched two years prior.
The Super Bomberman Collection has a stronger claim for being included than Tears of the Kingdom did in 2025, though. For starters, three-fifths of what’s included with the collection have never been released in the US before. Only the original Super Bomberman and its sequel came to SNES in the States, meaning this is the first time its three follow-ups have officially been playable there.
If you don’t think the Super Bomberman Collection counts, then Mewgenics remains the frontrunner for highest rated game of 2026. Cairn set the pace, and Nioh 3 was up there too briefly before its score dropped to a still very impressive 85. There will, undoubtedly, be more games to come this year that score 90 or more. Every single mainline GTA game from GTA 3 onwards has scored at least a 95 on Metacritic, so if GTA 6 hits that November release date, it will almost certainly be one of, if not the best-reviewed game of the year once all is said and done.
