Over the past couple of years, it’s been no secret that Stardew Valley creator Eric Barone has been grappling with the prospect of moving on from the title to start focusing on his next project, Haunted Chocolatier. He’s regularly committed himself to the title, only to announce another big Stardew Valley update just months later, and to be honest, you can’t really blame him.
Stardew Valley is still such a massively popular game, and Barone has dedicated over a decade of his life to the title, so moving on would be difficult for anyone. He said as much in a new interview with IGN, talking about his plans for the future of Stardew Valley, and whether he’s ever envisioned an end to updates and moving on.
Stardew Valley’s Creator Would “Love To” Make A Proper Sequel
“Just to be realistic at this point, there’s been many times where I was like, “All right, I think it’s going to be done after this update.” And then that never happens. So I think just realistically, it might not ever be done,” says Barone. However, one of his biggest worries is spending too much time on Stardew Valley and ignoring Haunted Chocolatier so much that the game will take a very long time.
Barone also claims that the game’s constant popularity is one of the main reasons as to why he keeps going back:
“Maybe if everyone stopped playing Stardew Valley, if it fell off, then maybe I wouldn’t be as inspired to keep working on it. A big part of it is just because it’s so popular. As long as people are still playing it, and it’s still popular, I’ll probably want to keep making updates for it.”
Stardew Valley: Every Farm Map, Ranked
Stardew Valley is a compelling, fun indie game you can spend hours on. You’ll be given the options of a few farm maps, and we’ve ranked them to help.
Despite that, though, Barone can see the end of Stardew Valley, and the possibility of a proper sequel to the title, rather than constantly updating the same game over and over again. In fact, he gets rather excited about the idea of a potential Stardew Valley 2, and says he “would love to” make it.
“I would love to because it would just be fun to work on a whole new set of characters, a whole new world, maybe capture some of that original energy that I had back in 2012, when I started working with Stardew Valley,” says Barone. “There’s something fun about the number of possibilities in a whole new world, which I think would be fun for me. It’d be fun for my team. We’d be really excited about it.
However, before you go getting distressed that Barone could potentially just abandon Haunted Chocolatier in favor of a Stardew Valley sequel, he has promised that anything else Stardew-related would most likely come after Haunted Chocolatier is released, which he jokingly says will release in the next 10 years. Fingers crossed it doesn’t actually take that long.
