Space Marine 2 Players Are Calling Paid Voice Pack A Scam

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2’s highly anticipated new class, the Techmarine, arrived yesterday along with The Chapter 1 Voice Pack, a $5 addition to the game that allegedly adds “over 1,300 voice lines.”

First, cheap downloadable content is rarely a crowd pleaser because players often feel like they’re being nickel-and-dimed by publishers who should have just put the content in the game for free instead. Predictably, Space Marine 2 players are wondering why Saber didn’t just add the voice pack to one of the game’s Season Passes.

However, the real controversy is the actual content of the pack, which people are wholly unsatisfied with. The description of the Chapter 1 Voice Pack reads as follows, “… adding over 1,300 voice lines re-recorded in the unique styles of Blood Angels, Space Wolves and Black Templars chapters.”

The FAQ goes into further detail: “It will contain over 450 voice lines per chapter, dubbed in the 7 audio languages already supported by the game, and introduce unique lines based on the Chapter (for example, the Space Wolf will shout ‘For the Allfather!’ instead of the usual ‘For the Emperor!’) and your Space Marine will shout these new lines.”

This section also clarifies that the voice lines were recorded by real actors: Thomas Mitchells (Blood Angels), Andrew James Spooner (Space Wolves) and Kris W. Laudrum (Black Templars).

Unfortunately, the reviews for the Voice Pack currently sit at “Overwhelmingly Negative” because players are unsatisfied with the amount of content contained within.

None of the usual banter between characters has been re-recorded. Saber had already announced this before the pack released, but, having your characters walk around a level with no dialogue being exchanged between them is sort of… eerie.

The more damning part of the pack is that none of the objective lines have been re-recorded, but, because they are mission-critical, your character will simply switch back to using the default voice lines when interacting with mission objectives.

“I wasn’t expecting the new voices to have banter with each other, that’s fine, but the default voice constantly cutting in for objectives is crazy,” writes Any_Middle7774. There are also complaints that voice lines aren’t being adjusted for characters who wear helmets, i.e. there’s no muffling.

There is scepticism surrounding the claim that there are 450 new voice lines per chapter, as players report only hearing a handful of new voice lines every mission.

“False advertising. There are no 450 voice lines in this game,” reads one aggrieved Steam review. “My disappointment? Immeasurable, my day? ruined,” adds Cyfyclops 3 on Reddit, summing up the community’s sentiment towards the voice pack.
