Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Is Getting A Reboot

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Is Getting A Reboot

Sony’s Spider-Man universe has given us some of the most… interesting superhero movies in the past few years. Besides Venom, which isn’t exactly a cinematic masterpiece either, we got the likes of Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, and of course, Morbius. No one yet knows what Sony’s strategy with these movies was, but it seems the universe is about to get a reboot.

Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group CEO, Tom Rothman revealed on The Town with Matt Belloni (via Kotaku) that Sony isn’t yet done with the Spider-Man universe (not the animated Spider-verse), and is planning to reboot it with more movies and a new cast of characters.

It’s Still Morbin’ Time For Sony

“Where are we in the Spider-Man franchise? Not at the animated Spider-Verse. Is the larger Spider-Verse dead? Are you going to go back to those at some point?” Belloni asked Rothman. The reply was a simple, “No”. Rothman also confirmed that Sony will be going back to them at some point, but it will be a “fresh reboot” with “new people”.

It would be an understatement to say that Sony’s Spider-Man movies didn’t perform well. They were ridiculed for their terrible quality and bad writing. Morbius even went on to attain meme status, with people playing it on Otakon machines and sending the entire movie to each other on Discord.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Is Shaping Up To Be The First Real Spider-Man Movie Since 2014

We’re finally back to the friendly neighbourhood.

With Kraven bombing as well, it looks like Sony finally had enough with the failure of these movies and has decided to shake things up. However, licensing is still an issue, but Spider-Man: No Way Home has shown that this hurdle can be overcome. Who knows? Maybe Sony will finally be able to bring back the Tobey Maguire movies.

We’ll have to wait and see what Sony’s reboot will finally end up being. Hopefully it’s not just more movies about B-tier Spider-Man villains. Though, I’d pay for a movie about The Kangaroo‘s origins set in Australia. And it better have the ears.
