Skate players are in a revolt, as the upcoming third season is briefly paywalling a new location after the developers previously promised “no map areas locked behind paywall”.
We’ve all been saying it for years, but a new Skate game should have been one of the easiest slam dunks for EA. Instead, it decided to go the way of a live-service game which, while initially quite popular and well-received, has had a hard time keeping its manual going throughout the new seasons.
Not only has the player count dropped significantly since launch, but the developers seem to keep making the worst possible choices that keep annoying the community even more. Things have really come to a head in the past 24 hours, though, as the announcement of Season 3 and the response to a paywall controversy seem like the last straw for a lot of players.
Skate Devs Say “Plans Have To Change” As They Walk Back The Promise Of No Paywalled Locations
All Of This For The Isle Of Grom…
Yesterday, the Skate team unveiled its plans for the game’s third season, which includes an expanded version of the game’s tutorial area, Isle of Grom. Skate players have been asking for more places to skate in since launch, so a mostly new area seems like an easy win, right? Not quite.

Skate Adds Yet Another Digital Currency For Halloween
If you’re looking for another way to give Skate your money, you’re in luck.
For some reason, Skate is locking access to the Isle of Grom behind the Premium Skate Pass for more than a month as an “added benefit”. This is despite the fact that the team confirmed three years ago that no new locations would be put behind a paywall, something fans were very quick to point out in the comments.
After being asked what happened to that promise, the Skate team said that it launched in early access to build the game with players, “not behind closed doors”. It also said that, “sometimes plans have to change” and that’s “part of the deal when you’re building in public”, which has gone down about as well as you can imagine.
It’s not exactly been smooth skating for Skate over the past few months, but this really does seem like a big turning point for most players. The game’s subreddit is completely filled with negative reactions to the announcement and the season’s contents, with some even crying for calls to “speak up”.
