Now that this year’s edition of The Game Awards is officially over, we can almost definitively say there was a ton of resolution to a number of massive storylines that percolated ahead of the annual event.
That mysterious statue? Oh, it was for a Divinity game from Larian Studios. All those teases for something related to “The Old Republic?” Yeah, Casey Hudson is helming a new Star Wars game. Lest we forget that the trademark for Control: Resonant was indeed real, and that’s coming out next year.

But if there’s one thing we seemingly didn’t get a resolution for, it’s Sega teasing everyone about not wanting to miss The Game Awards via its YouTube channel. Or, at least the resolution that everyone wanted.
In the end, that massive announcement was for the third and final unannounced Total War game, Total War: Warhammer 40K. It wasn’t for Persona 4, a new Sonic game, Shenmue or Virtua Fighter.
Naturally, everyone is still trying to figure out where things went wrong and having fun along the way.
Persona 4 Or A New Sonic Would’ve Been Awesome, But Alas
Taking to Twitter, one user wanted to know — Genuinely asking. What was the Sega announcement? Of course, there’s a good chance this person does know, but everyone around them is having some serious fun poking things.
The rest of the replies are all equally hilarious, including one that pokes fun at the fact that Mario Kart World beat Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds for Best Sports/Racing and Sega really just wanted people to see the “L” happen live.
As a Mega Man fan who was absolutely ecstatic to see Mega Man: Dual Override announced live, I do feel for fans of Persona and Sonic who were holding out hope that a similar giant announcement was going to be made. Alas, we’ll have to wait.
That said, while many are having fun at the expense of fans of the major Sega franchises (Sonic, Virtua Fighter, Persona or Yakuza), a Total War x Warhammer game has been a pipedream for a lot of people, and it’s in the works, so they’re celebrating with glee.
The only understandable frustration is that it’s really easy to forget that Creative Assembly, the group behind all these Total War games, is a subsidiary of Sega. So when you hear Sega plus big announcement potential, your mind really does go right to Sonic and the like.
Oh well.
