The original Silent Hill film has undergone a reappraisal in recent years, with critics retroactively heralding the film as “one of the best”, if not “the best”, video game adaptations. But in 2006, it was slammed for its “inane dialogue” and “overlong runtime”, disregarded as yet another failed translation to the silver screen. Suffice to say, the pressure on French director Christophe Gans, who pleaded with Konami for years to acquire the film rights, was intense, so much so that he even received death threats from fans.
We know that people who love video games are very passionate.
“It was a big challenge to adapt correctly and respectfully a game which is considered a classic,” Gans said in an interview with Variety. “We know that people who love video games are very passionate. I remember when I did the first film, I received plenty of death threats. People were saying, ‘If you mess up this one, we are going to find you.’ So I came onto the first film with great responsibility, and certainly even more with the second one. At the same time, it was important for me to imagine a movie that people who are not playing games can be interested in.”
You Guys Aren’t Ready For That Yet. But Your Kids Are Gonna Love It
Ultimately, Gans’ efforts would fall flat, as the film landed a meagre 34 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences have come to appreciate the film over the years.
“I was very pleased to see how the reputation of the movie has grown,” he said. “I did an international press junket [for Return to Silent Hill], and all the journalists were opening their interview by saying, ‘I saw the film when I was 13 or 14, and I loved it.’ It’s great, because suddenly I’m facing the 2.0 generation of Silent Hill lovers. It’s a very good feeling, because we know that you have some great films that disappear from memory in six months. The test of time is the ultimate test, when suddenly you face people who are talking about your work with a lot of enthusiasm.”
Christophe Gans famously directed Brotherhood of the Wolf, which inspired Bloodborne.
Video game adaptations have changed a lot since the early ’00s, however, with The Last of Us, Fallout, Arcane, and Sonic the Hedgehog setting a much higher bar even for trailblazers like Gans, and unfortunately, his latest work simply wasn’t up to par; Return to Silent Hill landed a 15 percent critic score and 30 percent audience score, marking it as the second-worst film in the trilogy.
Regardless, Gans isn’t deterred, and would happily direct another Silent Hill film if the opportunity presented itself. “I like this world,” he said. “I can see that plenty of people are thinking I’m doing a pretty good job.”
