Reviews for Return to Silent Hill have just started dropping, and it looks set to not only be the worst film in the franchise, but also one of the biggest flops of 2026. Yes, I know we’re 22 days into the year.
As the Silent Hill 2 remake from Bloober Team and Silent Hill f have recently proved (let’s pretend Ascension doesn’t exist for a second), Silent Hill is finally back and ready to make up for all of the lost time and rubbish games of the past decade. While Silent Hill is once again thriving in the world of games, that success isn’t universal.
Back when Konami announced Silent Hill’s big comeback, it also revealed a new movie, Return to Silent Hill, which would continue the series’ obsession with the mainline second game. James’ story certainly had potential for a movie, but the more that fans saw of it, the more it looked like a trainwreck in the making. Well, it looks like we were all right to be worried.
Return To Silent Hill Is Even Worse Than We All Thought
One Month Into 2026 And There’s Already A Frontrunner For Worst Movie
Ahead of its release tomorrow, reviews for Return to Silent Hill have recently started dropping. I don’t think anyone expected it to be a big hit or anything, but they’re somehow even worse than we all assumed. As of the time of writing, Return to Silent Hill sits with a stunningly low six percent on Rotten Tomatoes after 17 critic reviews.
Return To Silent Hill Fails To Understand The Simplicity Of Silent Hill 2’s Story
Returning to our special place on the big screen.
Although there’s a chance that the review score fluctuates as more reviews go live, as it currently stands, Return to Silent Hill is the worst-rated movie in the entire franchise. 2006’s simply titled Silent Hill from 2006 has a 33 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, while 2012’s dreadful Silent Hill: Revelation has 8 percent, just two points higher than Return.
So, why is Return to Silent Hill so bad, I hear you ask? The reviews that have been published so far give us plenty of reasons, from the simple fact that “it’s not scary, it’s not tense, it’s not even funny” to more specific complaints like the “poor performances” and “fumbled fright-night entertainment”. Sounds like Return fails on pretty much every level, then.
We’re not even one full month into 2026 yet, but it looks very likely that Return to Silent Hill is going to end up being one of the worst-reviewed films of the year, unless some real stinkers end up emerging and somehow scoring lower than six percent. For comparison, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, which many think is one of 2025’s worst films, has more than double that score at 16 percent. Ouch.
